Well, this stadium business is nothing new. Going back at least to Walter O’Malley in the 1950s, and his efforts to get a stadium for the Brooklyn Dodgers, team owners either threaten to, or actually do, move the team to another city if they don’t get their way.

I’ve also heard many discussions over the years, among fans, about how a city “needs” professional sports, to be a truly “world class” city. Generally they mean that a city should have teams in major league baseball, NFL football, NBA basketball, and NHL hockey, to be truly a “major” city.

I know some cities have had the voters vote on bond issues and financing deals for stadiums. Politicians who give away the store should be criticized, but in some places, voters themselves wanted to fund these stadium deals.

The image at the top of the article appears to be Los Angeles' new Sofi Stadium. That was a poor choice, as the stadium was built with private dollars. Los Angeles has done a lot of things wrong, but for over 20 years they denied throwing money at a stadium and eventually Stan Kroenke used private funding to buld a $4 billion stadium (L.A. might have provided infrastructure, such as roads).

Yet, despite wading in stacks of cash, the NFL continues to force American taxpayers to pay to build its team’s new stadiums or put billions of tax dollars into renovating older ones.

The NFL didn't force anybody to do anything. The team can threaten to leave if they don't get their way . . . hardly the equivalent of turning off the hot water. St. Louis still exists, and they never gave the Rams much love anyway, it's a baseball town.

All big businesses do that. Leverage city and state governments to give them benefits to go there, or stay there. Remember all crazy when Amazon announced they’d build a 2nd headquarters? Anytime you hear about a new plant being built somewhere, or a company moving you can guarantee there was some sort of bidding war of tax breaks, free road improvements, eminent domain to get the land, and tons of other stuff. People only complain about sports teams. But they’re just running the exact same business model as Toyota, Boeing, and everybody else big enough for city councils to gloat about come re-election time. You want it to stop, stop it across the board.
