The choice was this or shutting the government down...and giving all those government workers their back pay after their shutdown vacation. There just is no benefit to shutting the government down...it just creates a worse mess.

There's no point if they're just going to pass the same bill in a month.
But what if the Republicans simply refused to vote for a spending bill, for as long as it takes, until the spending they object to is removed?
Most of the GOP senators obviously don't have the spine to do this — they remember the showdown between Newt Gingrich and Bill Clinton, and they're afraid. But it's not the 90s any more.
And if they think the public won't go for a government shutdown, they can add pass a small temporary bill to keep at least parts of government running for a few weeks, as Elon Musk suggested. But don't vote for ridiculous spending, ever; hold out indefinitely — until the ridiculous parts are removed.

Can’t be much worse than the mess we are in now.
At least shut it down and show some spine.
The next Congress can take it up day 1 and maybe try to fix some of the messes in this piece of garbage.

Yup the same old hysterics. What ever will become of our nation if the Fedgov has to shut down all functions? First, they have never shut down ALL Fedov functions. They close parks, park services, and misc. services that impact few citizens. If they really shutdown the Fedgov, DC would be a ghost town.
Also, you're right, the Fedgov employees are on a paid vacation because the always get their back pay.
Shutdown scares are just another political ploy. Oh noes, I won't get my welfare check, until it arrives a couple weeks later. I hate DC.
