Afghan refugees in US face uncertainty as legislation stalls

Congress has failed so far to create a path to residency for Afghans who worked alongside U.S. soldiers in America’s longest war, pushing into limbo tens of thousands of refugees who fled Taliban control more than two years ago and now live in the United States.

Some lawmakers hoped to resolve the Afghans’ immigration status as part of a year-end government funding package, but that effort failed. The result is grave uncertainty for refugees now facing an August deadline for action from Congress before their temporary parole status expires.

Nearly 76,000 Afghans who worked with American soldiers since 2001 as translators, interpreters and partners arrived in the U.S. on military planes after the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021. The government admitted the refugees on a temporary parole status as part of Operation Allies Welcome, the largest resettlement effort in the country in decades, with the promise of a path to a life in the U.S. for their service.

Mohammad Behzad Hakkak, 30, is among those Afghans waiting for resolution, unable to work or settle down in his new community in Fairfax, Virginia, under his parole status. Hakkak worked as a partner to the U.S. mission in Afghanistan as a human rights defender in the now-defunct Afghan government.

“We lost everything in Afghanistan” after the Taliban returned to power, he said. “And now, we don’t know about our future here.”

For the past year, a bipartisan group of lawmakers, backed by veterans organizations and former military officials, pushed Congress to pass the Afghan Adjustment Act, which would prevent the Afghans from becoming stranded without legal residency status when their two-year humanitarian parole expires in August 2023.

As a result, mandatory in-person interviews for all Afghan applicants were written into the bill as well as requirements that relevant agencies brief Congress on proposed vetting procedures before putting them in place.

Despite that, the bill never made it out of the Judiciary Committee and failed to win inclusion in the just-passed $1.7 trillion government funding bill.

LOL. I’m sure they’re worried. Not a single one of them will ever be deported. There are illegal Dominicans and Haitians here “temporarily” for decades.

Relocate them all to Martha’s Vineyard or Washington DC. Just keep them out of the Midwest.

Fairfax VA, home of ultra woke George Mason University. Fairfax police were caught in a child trafficking sting operation. Used to be a nice place, but Fairfax and Manassas are overrun with illegals and Afghans.

Illegal trespassers cross our border and are given free reign in our cities and communities with no effort to deport them.

But Afghans who supported, protected and saved the life of many US troops are going to be kicked out because the fascists want to apply the rules to the Afghans, not the trespassers.

Give them all jobs at the IRS and the FBI, they would be better than the ones we have serving now.

Wisconsin was given 800 to care for. They put them at Fort McCoy in the center of our state.

Hundreds just walked away and no one bothered to go find them.

Grrrrr!

76,000 seems very high.

I read another article that Camp McCoy has filed some kind of request or budget line item that it will cost $154.5 Million to recover from the damage and wear and tear these Afghans have caused.

Camp McCoy must be very very different from what remember, if it costs $154.5 Million just to clean the place up. Unless, of course, that includes repaving I-94 for several miles.

“LOL. I’m sure they’re worried. Not a single one of them will ever be deported.”

Of course, but then that’s not the problem. The problem is that if they’re all placed into Red States, the Red States will have a reason to deny them ‘benefits’ (not here legally), so they’ll be forced to locate in Blue States, which is against the DNC Agenda.

These are the people who destroyed Army bases to the tune of $250 million?

We went to Afghanistan in 2001 with a goal of defeating the Taliban.
We left in 2021 ceding power to the Taliban.
How many dead, maimed, and ruined minds of US personnel?
How much money wasted?
How are the poppy yields doing?
To top it off, we now have more third world trash in our country.
“Mission Accomplished”

Yep. As a Desert Shield/Storm Vet, those of us mobilized KNEW that this would go on FOREVER (1991-2022!) and would not end well, and would accomplish NOTHING.

So much wasted American blood and treasure!

And Mother Government is doing a p*ss-poor job of taking care of her disabled Veterans! (Not me; I’m fine, but still, it infuriates me!)

We couldn’t just send them to Pakistan or Uzbekistan etc right next door where they would still be in their own culture. No that would have been too intelligent. 😣

The only real thing members of Congre$$ are good at is holding their hands out for donations to get themselves re-elected so they can spend even more of our money and get themselves rich in the process.
