Snow go for NYC’s electric garbage trucks that can’t handle winter weather

Don’t count on seeing electric garbage trucks plowing snow from city streets any time soon.

The city Department of Sanitation's goals to become carbon neutral are clashing with the limits of electric-powered vehicles.

The department aims to switch all 6,000 vehicles in its fleet from gas to electric as part of the state’s goal to reduce emissions by 2040. But city officials say they haven’t found electric garbage trucks that are powerful enough to plow snow.

When the temperature drops, so does the output of batteries. Anyone who has cranked a car on a cold morning knows as much.

The electric snowplows work great in temperatures of 70° or higher.

like all centralized economic-planning schemes based on utopian/apocalyptic ideology - the “green energy transition” will fail BADLY

They will never overcome economics, human nature and especially PHYSICS

The only question is - how long will they persist? And how much will average people have to suffer before they admit it?

Most politics just don’t mix with common sense, especially not the ones on the left.

The electric garbage trucks can melt all the snow when the batteries explode.

But officials say previous electric trucks tested by sanitation have not lasted longer than four hours plowing snow before running out of power

“We found that they could not plow the snow effectively – they basically conked out after four hours. We need them to go 12 hours,” Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch

I would posit that, quite apart from the whole Eco-mentalist Greenie nonsense, electric garbage trucks *just as garbage trucks* would make sense. They don’t need to drive long distances, they spend a significant fraction of their time idling, and when they’re not idling they’re stop-and-start driving. In a more temperate climate, they would probably be a good idea. NYC gets cold, and more to the point they have to double as snowplows.

Maybe if they used garbage to burn and power the trucks.

“Carbon neutral” the idol of the Left, which is utterly meaningless.

Imagine the problems, the diseases that could have been solved if carbon wasn’t the Left’s obsession. Really it’s the ego of them single handedly “saving the planet” to compensate for their otherwise moronic selves is the idol.

..The department aims to switch all 6,000 vehicles in its fleet from gas to electric

damn, that's a lot of charging stations and a heckuva lot more weight on the streets of NYC. Anybody have the weight of an electric garbage truck vs. a diesel? my bet is at least 25% more...

Classic book of the way technology pushes things to the side for “progress.” As a Luddite I love this old time book.

Synopsis:
Katy is a big bulldozer that plows in the summer when it’s nice out, and plows snow in the winter. But when winter comes and there isn’t much snow, all the other plows are put to use and Katy is kept in. Until one day, a great snowstorm hits and everyone in the town, including all the other snow plows, are stranded! Now, it’s up to Katy and her “chug, chug, chug” endurance to get the town moving again.

Exactly right. If it was used just as a garbage truck, and if it wasn't expected to do much when temps are below zero, an electric garbage truck might be useful (if you can get one almost as cheap as an ICE garbage truck).

As an owner of both an EV car and an ICE pickup, I can't see myself getting an EV if I didn't live in the warm south. There are other factors that also go into play on whether or not an EV is good for you. I can't stand the Dims forcing a one-size-fits-few model.

Every generation has a false prophet claiming the end of the world. AOC and her ilk are just more of the same, using seriously flawed “science” as their gospel.

And while some false prophets may have been sincere in their beliefs, I don’t for a minute believe these people believe what they are selling. It’s a boondoggle wrapped in a scam wrapped in a long con.
