As readers know, I am a critic of Putin’s “limited military operation” in Ukraine. It was eight years late, and its limited objective is unrealistic. Putin needed to occupy Kiev the minute he saw the US coup unfolding. Failing this, he needed to reincorporate Donbass in 2014 prior to its partial occupation by neo-Nazi militias and Ukrainian military. He failed to act in a timely fashion because he was deceived by the West with the Minsk Agreement, which was a delaying tactic to keep Russia at bay until the US had built and equipped a Ukrainian Army.
I understand why the Kremlin limited its intervention last February to clearing the Independent Donbass Republics of Ukrainian forces. Putin did not invade Ukraine, because he did not want widespread death and destruction in Ukraine, long a part of Russia with extensive intermarriage and mixing of populations. Where the Kremlin failed was in not realizing that Washington would not permit the conflict to be limited to the clearing of Donbass.

I knew Tiger Woods was a Ukrainian warlord.
His nickname is “Iron”-man.
but even still, in order to feel safe, Russia will need to occupy territory with 180 million people they don't have nearly the population or equipment to occupy that territory. So even without NATO what happens then?
Tiger is very upset. He just mourns and mourns and mourns about Ukraine.

Former French President Hollande confirms the Angela Merkle stated - that the western nations used the Minsk agreements as a ploy.
Russia calls for Angela Merkel and François Hollande to be put on trial
Hah! That was oops.
Interesting.
So Donbass was the target and Kiev was a feint?
Oooohh. That wily Putin!!
Putin’s mistake was thinking he could have a limited war with limited objectives. He avoided targeting infrastructure, especially bridges. Now he’s having to go back and start targeting infrastructure after the targets have been hardened and air superiority has been lost.
The war is closer to Flanders in 1916 than Barbarossa.
I think of it like Japan invading Manchuria in 1931. It set the wheels in motion that led to a global conflaguration 10 years later.
“Does that mean that people are going to start dying for real?”
Ya nevah know!
It was access to Crimea which had been Russia Proper and a key asset to the Russian Navy for over 200 years.
The use of phrases like, “if this is true” make this article suspect.
At this time last year we kept hearing about the 100,000 troops massing on the border of Ukraine. These warnings were being blared out of sources—suspect and mainstream.
If the west needs to be prompted to spend more money on Ukraine, you would think we would be hearing about this 570,000 troop escalation in an effort to generate a sense of urgency.
Are we to believe that Russia has committed 30-40% of their total armed forces to the borders of Ukraine? This number includes their Air Forces and Naval forces. So…in essence, their entire Army—with all its resources are on the Ukrainian border?
Or, are we to believe the Russian government has quietly stripped their economy of half a million more working aged males to send them to Ukraine.
I appreciate the dire warnings this article presents….but the numbers simply don’t add up.
A couple hundred thousand dead and Ukraine destroyed for the next 50 years seems like a war to me.
Maybe they are re-defining war down, so Americans won’t complain until we ourselves suffer a couple hundred thousand dead.
Which countries are you referring to? Ukraine had 43 million people before the invasion.
We are hearing about Russian troops amassing on the border of Ukraine, multiple articles have been posted on FR about a huge pending Russian offensive.
Is the Russian invasion true or not, who knows.
The MSM is not reporting anything about any new Russian invasion, just like they squashed any alternative narratives about Covid they are not reporting anything that upsets the MIC in Washington
I guess according to Paul, Korea and Vietnam weren’t real wars either.
