Some refuse to be ranked by U.S. News, which weighs test scores and grades rather than diversity.
To see how the diversity, equity and inclusion mania is colliding with meritocracy in American higher education, pay attention to the flap over graduate schools pulling out of the U.S. News rankings. Readers who aren’t applying to medical school may have missed the controversy. But anyone who plans on seeing a doctor or benefiting from research or treatment at an academic medical center has an interest in the outcome.
So far, U.S. News has resisted demands from the graduate schools to base the rankings on equity rather than on the grades and test scores of incoming students. U.S. News has been transparent about the method it uses for its rankings, including factors such as a reputation survey, MCAT scores and grade point averages of incoming students.
The medical schools have been similarly clear about why they disagree with the U.S. News method and will stop participating. The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, in a Jan. 24 statement, said the U.S. News rankings undermine the school’s “commitment to anti-racism” and “outreach to diverse communities.”
“Diversity, equity and inclusion are important factors in our decision,” the school’s deans, Dennis Charney and David Muller, said. “We believe that the quality of medical students and future physicians is reflected in their lived experiences, intersecting identities, research accomplishments, commitment to social and racial justice, and a set of core values that are aligned with those of our school.”
The statement went on, “The U.S. News rankings reduce us to a number that does not do justice to these profoundly important attributes, instead perpetuating a narrow focus on achievement that is linked to reputation and is driven by legacy and privilege.”

Merit has no role at universities except for sports teams and then it is athletic merit.
Forget the actual medical competency; their ESG/DIE score is what's important.
Hide yo’ free ranging chickens!
It’s certain med schools that are wanting only DEI criteria, not US News.
Medical schools are there to educate the next generation of pill pushers for Big Pharma. You don’t need academic merit and rigor for that, in fact it may get in the way.
Wonder where the Hollywood Upstairs Medical College comes down on this issue?
It is not USN&WR that is pushing for lower standards, it us the medical schools.
Brrrwaaakkk...
I see you have learned some appropriate lessons from Covid!
Soon enough we will travel to Mexico for treatment or South America.
Your best bet for a physician is one over 50 years of age. The age before “wokeness” so to speak. The same goes for an attorney. When researching a physician, check to see which medical school he/she/it/they attended and research as to how long that school has been a part of the “equity and anti-racist” culture of teaching. (If your doctor is an “it” or “they” that might be a clue.)
At this point, you might do better in treating everyday illnesses by consulting the 80 old couple in your neighborhood. The fact that they have lived to 80 shows they have a better grasp on healthy living that most of the current practicing physicians.
Flu shots are annually scheduled.
They have the desirable quality of being targeted for the current form of the virus.
ROFL!
“The Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation has funded a three-year Anti-Racist Transformation (ART) in Medical Education project to replicate Icahn School of Medicine and Mount Sinai’s (ISMMS) change-management strategy at 11 partner medical schools in the United States and Canada.”

Went to med school in the early 80’s.
Even back then they were choosing diversity over merit.
If you your white and flunked a class you were out.
If you were black you got 2 more tries.
One of my black friends who was a great student said to me “I would never go to black doctor because you don’t know if they graduated because of merit or because of affirmative action.”
Seems to be on steroids now.
We’re abandoning intellect for emotions. Ain’t gonna end well.
I want the best surgeon to perform surgery on my heart, I wouldn’t care if he was racist or a Democrat.
