Former President Donald Trump, who has already announced he is running for president in 2024, is not happy about the prospect of facing Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) in the race.
“When I hear he might run, I consider that very disloyal,” Trump told reporters Saturday.
Trump sought to take credit for DeSantis’ ascent to the governor’s office and questioned polling showing DeSantis defeating him in some of the early primary states.
DeSantis has been in the governor’s office since 2019, and won reelection in November by almost 20 percentage points.
A poll published Thursday by the University of New Hampshire shows Trump trailing DeSantis by 12 percentage points among likely voters in the GOP’s presidential primary in the state.
“He won’t be leading, I got him elected,” Trump said, according to Politico.
Trump also took issue with DeSantis’ COVID-19 approach, accusing the governor’s team of “trying to rewrite history.”
“There are Republican governors that did not close their states,” Trump said, according to CNN. “Florida was closed for a long period of time.”
However, DeSantis’ COVID-19 handling was exactly what earned him praise from the right.
In April 2020, DeSantis became one of the last governors in the country to order a statewide lockdown after speaking to Trump, according to NPR. But by September of that year, he vowed to not reinstate restrictions, ordered a full reopening of bars and restaurants in the state (defying guidance from public health officials), and banned fines for those who refused to wear a mask or maintain social distancing.
The Florida governor ordered schools to reopen for in-person learning in August 2020 even as COVID-19 cases were skyrocketing.
DeSantis, in recent months, has questioned the efficacy of lifesaving COVID-19 shots, given a platform to vaccine skeptics, and even suggested permanently banning COVID-19 mandates.

A lot of sunk cost fallacy and cult of personality going on with this.
Mr. President, if you want a friend, get a dog.
I have no idea why he is doing this. DeSantis isn’t a candidate and has never intended to be. His wife has some health issues and his kids are young and he doesn’t want them in DC.
I don’t believe anything coming out of the leftist/socialist/communist/fascist/hate-America HuffPo or MSN sources.
Nothing.
And the division keeps on rollin’. Gotta give the democommies kudos for their ability to stand behind whatever loser the supreme rulers pick.
I think Trump is doing what he did to Jeb, attacking the strongest guy in the prison to establish dominance.
It’s a shame. Trump / Desantis teaming up together would be extremely difficult for the left to stop. We don’t need these 2 attacking each other.
Donald, with all due respect: Shut your mouth!
Adding “disloyal” to my list of BS words and phrases.
I have never seen DeSantis attacking Trump. There is no moral equivalence here.
It almost seems as though Trump is intentionally attempting to goad DeSantis into running.
Trump sees De Santis as a threat to his position as the only credible 2024 candidate. Also Trump has a huge ego and treats peers as enemies because he sees himself as peerless.
Notice how the author conveniently and seamlessly inserted “Life Saving” when mentioning the covid death shots.
DeSantis has ignored Trump’s attacks. That’s good leadership.
Yeah...The Huffington Post as about as honest as anything...Oh, yeah...The left says anything they want to say, and people in here clamor all over it like it is the gospel...
on the surface yes. We don’t know what desantis is up to when he’s meeting with Paul Ryan etc.
But i really wish Trump would just say desantis is my VP, and get to work on getting re-elected for the 3rd time.
Unless you wish to claim the quotes are fake, then Trump is a POS and not qualified to lead our party any longer.
A lot is written out of context...
So we should only have one candidate?? And it has to be Trump.....so Pence and Pompeo and Haley will be deemed disloyal also?
desantis released a statement 2 weeks ago instructing people not to donate any money to any organization that claims he’s running for president in 2024...
