Russia’s Casualties in Ukraine Near 200,000
The Wall Street Journal ^ | Feb. 4, 2023 | Ann M. Simmons and Nancy A. Youssef

MOSCOW—Close to 200,000 Russian troops have been killed or wounded in the war in Ukraine, according to estimates from U.S. and European officials, a toll that is likely to continue to rise as the Kremlin readies a fresh offensive in the coming weeks.

The U.S. military, which keeps rough estimates on Russian casualties in Ukraine, puts the figure for wounded and dead at roughly 180,000, though officials stressed such figures aren’t precise, a U.S. defense official said.

The tally matched assessments by Norway’s defense chief Gen. Eirik Kristoffersen, who said last week that the number of Russian soldiers killed or injured was approaching 180,000. Mr. Kristoffersen estimated that 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed or wounded, in line with an estimate Pentagon officials put out in November.

The casualty count comes as Moscow’s forces press an eastern offensive in an effort to seize the advantage on the battlefield before tanks pledged by Kyiv’s allies begin to arrive in Ukraine and as the conflict approaches its one-year mark on Feb. 24.

The Kremlin and Ministry of Defense didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on the Western casualty assessments.

In September, Russia’s Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, said 5,937 Russian military personnel had been killed in the conflict in Ukraine. That was only the second time Russian authorities had released any official casualty count. That figure hasn’t been updated since.

Are they going to tell us their estimate of Ukrainian soldier deaths or do only Russian soldier lives matter?

Probably more like 30-40k mostly right before the pullback.

Wagner is another story. Probably another 20-30k there.

Ukrainians and vols are probably 150k. Half from Russian artillery at Bakmut alone.

By comparison, the U.S. lost 110,000 dead to fentanyl just in 2022. Mostly young, mostly white, mostly male.

Problem with the war is that russians are killing civilians, right and left. It’s probably impossible to count the number of Ukrainians killed by these monsters.

that’s four times the soviet casualties over a period of ten years in Afghanistan, where said war was instrumental in bringing down the soviet union ...

there were almost 60,000 U.S. fatalities in Vietnam during its twenty year duration, where said war brought down the Democrats ...

i wonder how much longer the russian people are going to put up with putin’s insanity ..

Normal countries led by responsible leaders honor the premise of military service, that the lives of soldiers will not be expended without good cause and a reasonable hope of victory. That is not the case with Russia and Putin. These men have died or suffered wounds that bring no benefit to Russia or her people and without an appreciable prospect of victory.

Yet, as grievous as Russia's casualties are, they are but a down payment toward what is to come. The cost of Russia's attack on Ukraine will likely soon include Putin's end, the collapse of his regime, and perhaps the end of the Russian federation itself. Putin will go down in Russian history as not just a bad ruler but as foolish and evil.

Exactly, the Russian people are dying, they are being sent as cannon fodder to please the rich deep-state politicians in the Kremlin in their imperialistic land-grabbing-of-other-people’s-countries euphoria.

The death rate from alcohol-related causes in Russia amounted to 196,000 people in 2018: 146,000 men and 50,000 women. Probably higher in 2022.

Ukraine and Russia were close to negotiating a peace deal last April. The UK and us squelched any deal. Any casualties after that point is our fault. We have blood on our hands.

Take the numbers they are claiming for Russia
Multiply by 8 for Ukraine
OK….Or maybe just 3-4
Wait…too high?

Then just substitute numbers claimed here as Ukrainian
Then divide by 8 for Russia

If Russia lost 200,000 troops entire units would be wiped off their order of battle

Challenge this source to list them

Actually, it’s more unclear on the Ukrainian side because the Ukrainian leadership tends to leave their corpses on the battlefield so they don’t have to reimburse the bereaved.

The BBC had ai that trolled through Russian social media and estimated 25k died because of mentions and retweets etc. I think it’s more than that (probably double) because people are reticent to talk about such things in Russia and some just don’t have socials. Wagner is taking the brunt after the withdrawal and their people are radio silent/criminals so I’m guessing their numbers.

The Russian army proper hasn’t been fighting since fall. They’ve just hammered Ukrainians with artillery. Wagner’s been doing the heavy work. Ukrainian troop rotations and movements make it pretty clear that they’re having to continually replace battle groups in Bakmut as artillery takes its toll.

This war needs to end. Innocent people are dying and NATO will lose. 700k soldiers are lined up read to go on the Russian side and these are occupation, not invasion, forces.
