(NEXSTAR) – Residents of 32 states who rely on federal assistance to buy food are about to see their benefits shrink at the end of the month.
An emergency increase to SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly called the Food Stamp Program) was approved at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. For most recipients, that increase amounted to an extra $95 monthly over the past three years.
Starting March 1, those emergency COVID-era benefits will end across all states.
Seventeen states already saw those benefits expire as of January 2023. One state, South Carolina, ended the emergency allotment at the start of February.

I saw a lady buy a bunch of food with her SNAP card and get into a new Acura SUV.
Then a man in front of me bought a bunch of expensive fish and meat and then proceeds to buy beer with cash.
SNAP and SS should both increase with inflation. There is no way the COLA’s this year are sufficient for this level of inflation.
Yup, there’s a lot of abuse of the system.
Hunger is a great motivator to work.
2 Thessalonians 3:10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.
it’s not a benefit. it’s a handout...
OTOH - isn’t it likely that the extra $95 a month fueled inflation? Hmmm.... was that ignored by the media?
Being reduced by almost $100 month for food will be a real hardship and difficult to live with for many seniors who are not wealthy, which would be most of us.
And just no eat beans replies, please - that’s insulting and offensive.
The least you could do is say “Thank you”.
The scammers are going to be in hog heaven
Amen to that. My wife went around donating to soup kitchens yesterday, most of which are sadly empty. Breaks my heart to see seniors there.
According to the article, more than 41 million Americans were using SNAP benefits to help afford food. Wow.
Most seniors receive very little in SNAP benefits.
By the time you add it all up they're hauling in $100,000 a year in benefits for staying home and screwing. It's no wonder we can't get anyone to work.
Most of the people I see using SNAP here are older then me.

I’d quit today if I could get that gig
Florida had the extra food stamp $$ for well over a year but it ended about a year ago. There was no extra $95 here in Florida like they are talking about here. My brother and his wife are on food stamps and they were telling us that they get like $180 a month and when the state started giving out the extra it went up to like $400. That is really generous.

And from what I understand, getting SNAP opens the doors to all kinds of other ‘freebies’. Free internet, free cell phone and likely free healthcare through Medicaid.
Like all government programs, it is fraught with abuse. No one would begrudge the genuinely hungry from getting help, but there is no way that many people are in genuine need.
Stick your nose else where
