It’s “Ukraine” not “the Ukraine”, and nobody has made the claim that they have not sustained any losses in their existential fight against the russian invaders.

When you see “the Ukraine” and it sounds a little off, that is because it was probably written by a Russian troll. “The Ukraine” is the Russian term for Ukraine. It means “the borderland”. Using it in that way means it was a part of Russia’s border territory. Of course there are sentences which use those two words together that don’t sound a little off, but I have seen enough that didn’t sound quite American that I realized for sure they were written by a troll.
