Wagner Boss Shifts Bakhmut Expectations as Ukraine Holds On
Newsweek ^ | 2/16/2023 | Isabel van Brugen

Russia could encircle the war-ravaged city of Bakhmut in Ukraine's Donetsk region by March or April, according to a new assessment by Yevgeny Prigozhin, founder of the Wagner Group, which has been leading an offensive alongside Russian troops against the city since July.

In video interviews with Russian media published late on February 15, Prigozhin, who has been sidelined by the Kremlin in recent weeks, appeared to shift expectations on the potential capture of Bakhmut.

Prigozhin blasted Russia's "monstrous military bureaucracy" for its failure to seize the city before the end of last year, and warned that Russia should not underestimate or play down Ukraine's armed forces by saying that Bakhmut is "surrounded."

"If they are not surrounded, why should we say they are? We shouldn't downplay the enemy in this," he said.

He said his best guess for possible encirclement of the industrial city is in March or April, although new weapon deliveries by Western allies to Ukraine will have a significant impact on his assessment.

"It's very hard to guess. It all depends on how actively...they're now getting new weapon types," Prigozhin said.

"We will be definitely destroying these Leopards. We'll definitely figure out how to burn them, but it's a factor of extreme importance too," Prigozhin added.

Acc to Grey Zone, Wagner’s gunners are asking the Russian MoD for ammunition in the face of the shortage problems they are having.

“Right now we are completely cut off from ammunition supplies. At the moment there is an acute shortage of ammunition for howitzers, respectively 152 mm D-1, also for the MT-12 anti-tank gun - 100 millimeters of fragmentation, for the T-72 tank - 125 millimeters of fragmentation, also for the 120 mm mortar 2B11”

We'll definitely figure out how to burn them,

Well, that's an interesting admission.

He can’t burn anything without ammo from Shoigu and the Russian MOD.

Jon Boy said Bakhmut was already surrounded.

Is he lying? Misinformed?

Shoigu cut off Wagner’s artillery support near Bakhmut a month ago. Now he’s cut off Wagner’s ammo. No honor among criminals and thieves.

Shoigu cut off Wagner so Prigozhin wouldn’t capture Bakhmut in time for Putin’s “Victory Concert” on Feb 22nd.

And Gerasimov promised Shoigu a big win in Vuhledar in time for Putin’s “Victory Concert”. And we know how that went.

It will be a sad concert for Putin.

If he is the Jon boy to whom I think you are referring, he is a pathological liar.

“He can’t burn anything without ammo...”

Well, Russians did invent the “molotov cocktail”, so they can always try that again.

Funny how certain pro-Kremlin appeasers around here have repeatedly declared that “it’s over.”

Well, the rumors were that Prigo and Kadyrov were maneuvering to get Shoigu pushed out, so that may be why Shoigu is pushing back. If you come at the King (or the King’s flunky), you better not miss.

Well, when FReepers tell you “it’s over for Ukraine” for nearly 365 days in a row, then you know it must be getting serious.
