Biden’s Own Administration Calls Pete Buttigieg’s Claims on East Palestine Train ‘Misinformation’
Breitbart ^ | 2.16.23 | ALANA MASTRANGELO

A member of Biden’s own administration called U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg’s claims about the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio — in which he blamed former President Donald Trump — “misinformation.”

On Tuesday, while addressing the rail disaster, Buttigieg falsely claimed he is “constrained by law on some areas of rail regulation” and cited a “braking rule” that was withdrawn in 2018, under the Trump administration.

Buttigieg was referring to the Department of Transportation (DOT) withdrawing a proposed rule requiring trains carrying certain dangerous chemicals to use electronically controlled pneumatic (ECP) brakes.

After that, social media users circulated this claim on Twitter, echoing Buttigieg by blaming Trump for the train derailment in Ohio earlier this month.

But on Thursday, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Chair Jennifer Homendy took to Twitter to implore the public to “PLEASE STOP SPREADING MISINFORMATION” about what caused the train disaster.

While lamenting about what she called “misinformation,” Homendy mentioned the false claim promulgated by Buttigieg on Tuesday.

“For example,” she said, “Some are saying the ECP (electronically controlled pneumatic) brake rule, if implemented, would’ve prevented this derailment. FALSE.”

The NTSB Chair went on to explain that “The ECP braking rule would’ve applied ONLY to HIGH HAZARD FLAMMABLE TRAINS,” and that “the train that derailed in East Palestine was a MIXED FREIGHT TRAIN containing only 3 placarded Class 3 flammable liquids cars.”

“This means even if the rule had gone into effect, this train wouldn’t have had ECP brakes,” Homendy declared.

In additional tweets, Homendy stressed that “nothing is more important than accuracy at a moment like this,” and that “anyone speculating about what happened, didn’t happen, or should’ve happened is misleading a suffering community.”

WHat actually did cause the derailment?

Broken track?

Failed wheel?

Failed brakes?

Sabotage?................................

A member of the regime going against the grain and actually contradicts not only a member of the Royal Cabinet, but one who is also a member of a protected species? Especially about a story that places the blame on President Trump and his administration?
Holy Schmoly!!!!
I have no doubt that NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy will soon be ‘resigning’ to spend more time with her family.

Based on the video evidence I saw yesterday there was a hot box on one of the cars - likely caused by a stuck hand brake OR overheated or failed bearings on an axle. This generated a massive amount of heat and eventually metal fails when heated beyond its capacity. You fail an axle at speed on a heavily loaded train and you are going to get a derailment.

The engineer either ignored or failed to recognize the problem (I doubt this - they have sensors along the rail lines that should have notified him that he had a “hot box”) or the engineer was denied permission to stop the train and address the problem because blocking a rail line can costs millions of dollars per 30 minute increments. The video below shows what was happening 20km prior to the derailment. They should have stopped the train.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHiXZUgQEwc

A “hot box” is the term used when an axle bearing overheats on a piece of railway rolling stock

Air brakes work for trains but the bigger the train the harder it is to stop and there are shortcomings for air brakes in these situations.

The obvious changes that I expect are to limit the size of trains carrying hazmat materials AND to implement a mandatory stoppage and fire department response to a hot box.

Profit has to be balanced against risks. Boeing just learned a hard lesson about this and I suspect that the railroads are on the same path at the moment.

They’re backing away from Little Peter Buttcrack in more ways than one. Maybe we’ll get lucky and Pete will be next to go.

“anyone speculating about what happened, didn’t happen, or should’ve happened is misleading a suffering community.”

It's what DIDN'T happen in the aftermath that is the scandal.

The railroad is incredibly powerful politically so they are very good at resisting federal regulations that impact their bottom line.

I believe the big rail companies are self-insured but I will defer to others if they have first-hand knowledge.

"Maybe we’ll get lucky and Pete will be next to go."

Buttigieg may have transferable experience when it comes to advice on lubrication for piston engines, but he's obviously over his head on freight trains. Norfolk-Southern derailments and Lionel derailments are not handled the same way.
