RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia voters on Tuesday elected Democrat Jennifer McClellan, a veteran state legislator from Richmond, to fill an open seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, where she will make history as the first Black woman to represent the state in Congress.
“We will make this commonwealth and this country a better place for everyone,” McClellan said in a victory speech at a party with supporters in Richmond. “I am ready to get to work.”
McClellan, 50, prevailed over right-wing Republican nominee Leon Benjamin in the special election for the blue-leaning 4th District, which has its population center in the capital city and stretches south to the North Carolina border.

A Democrat won in a Democrat area. No surprise.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Bummer, but thanks for posting.
No bias from the fake media. A dyed-in-the-wool Leftist wins, replacing another Leftist.
Opponent was a ‘right winger’, according to the writer.
Oh, how we have fallen.
They probably had a lot of completed mail in ballots left over from the mid-terms.
A McClellan wins in the Old Dominion?
Is she related by marriage to the G.A.R. General?
A Mclellan democrat won in VA? Say it isn’t so. Well, one more for the heritage destroying Richmond gulag reparatio que. Line up fo the handouts.. just because.
Republican only got 25%. Strong trend in favor of Democrats.
The GOP doesn’t inspire anyone anymore.
I believe it was and is a heavily Dim area.
No surprises.
I fail to see why that’s significant.
All they see is GOP infighting and Democrat discipline.
Until the GOP factions find a way to reconcile, Democrats will stay in control.
You cannot force unity, amongst individualists, which is what conservatives tend to be.
All about the Benlamins.
Hey, a McClellan finally won a victory in Virginia.
Republicans need to learn that almost every time they nominate a black Republican to run against a black Democrat, the black Democrat is going to win.
There's a very real subset of black voters who don't like voting for black politicians because they believe they're inherently corrupt and will screw things up. They believe white people are better at politics than blacks are. But in a race between two blacks, they default to party.
For some crazy reason, this demographic is never discussed.
And then there's a subset of southern whites who aren't going to vote for a black politician for any reason. In a race between two blacks, they stay home.
