The wealth of the British royal family consists mostly of impressive prestige residential money pits like castles and income generating real estate that cannot be sold. In effect, although the sovereign and the family get income from various properties, most are entailed so that they can be passed on only to heirs. Nowadays, many in the royal family have relatively limited disposable income and find it hard to keep up with wealthier friends in the aristocracy or higher ranks of business people.
