Her story is actually very sad. She was let down by everyone all her life long. Never caught a break. She was present during murders but she did not participate. The trials against the Manson Family might have been impossible without her testimony and assistance. She had a confused, disordered, sad life — but she knew it. And to some extent tried to do what she could to make up for it.

She said she didn’t participate. Bugliosi, the prosecutor, was willing to go along with that because he wanted an eyewitness and wanted her to be credible and had to justify not charging her. I’ve never been convinced one way or the other. I guess I’ve got to give her the benefit of the doubt. She certainly went with the others and I don’t think she turned herself in until the others had been arrested. But deals like that are done all the time and she did help get the others get convicted.
