Beginning in April 2023, Discover will become the first credit card issuer to track gun purchases made by their cardholders.
On September 11, 2022, Breitbart News noted that Visa caved to pressure from gun control groups and New York Democrats, agreeing to flag gun and ammo purchases via a new sales categorization. The Associated Press observed that Mastercard and other major credit cards also agreed to flag gun sales.
On March 2, 2023, the Independent Journal Review (IJR) reported that Discover will be first among credit card companies to track gun sales, inasmuch as the company will begin doing so in April.
IJR explained, “Anyone using a Discover card to make a purchase in a gun store will have that purchase tracked, beginning in April.”
There are over 55 million Discover cards in usage, so a lot of information on gun purchases can be gathered via that one company.
Reuters pointed out Discover Financial Services was ahead of Visa and Mastercard in February 2023, noting that Discover would “allow its network to track purchases at gun retailers come April, making it the first among its peers to publicly give a date for moving ahead with the initiative, which is aimed at helping authorities probe gun-related crimes.”
Discover told Reuters, “We remain focused on continuing to protect and support lawful purchases on our network while protecting the privacy of cardholders.”

The nation splits further and further.
Go ahead, keep pushing. Watch what happens.
I thought they track all sales. I get different points on one of my cards depending on the purchase category.
Cash
Sounds like they’re traipsing through lawsuit territory to me.
All electronic transactions can easily be tracked - and probably are - whether the cc company policy is official or not. Always better to pay cash.
The joke is if you are super rich (hoi oligoi) you have access to credit cards that will track nothing as one of the perks. This is literally for the hoi polloi only.
You could be buying an AR or you could be buying a new scope, they won't know, but they'll count it against your social credit score, comrade.
Uh, cash advance option? Don’t actually use the card for the gun purchase.
Pay cash or use a prepaid Visa card you can buy at any Wai-Mart
Cut up your Discover Cards and use cash when you can, while you still can.
I wish I had a Discover card so that I could cancel it. Oh well, use cash.
So, boycott the card.
If a popular (& yummy) Chicken shop funded kiddie grooming shows surely you’d stop giving them money to them so they’d corrupt kids.
Surely.
No? Apparently, you don’t understand cause&effect. You must be a PedoPres “voter”, then. You must be so proud.
NEVER had a DISCOVER CARD.
THIS ACTION ASSURES THAT I NEVER WILL
Didn’t know it still existed, but the article states there are 55 million Discover cards in usage.
Not here.
Why use a credit card if you can pay in cash and avoid all the hassle? First be sure to let it be known to the dealer that the *reason* you are paying in cash is to avoid credit card gun purchase tracking, and doing so benefits both you and him.
If he knows what is going on, you might even discuss with him setting up a “credit card avoidance” system for both guns and ammo, if not accessories, for his customers.
He should be aware that CC companies are both using this as an excuse to curtail his use of CC purchases, part of “operation chokepoint”, and are keeping customer databases of gun purchases which they give to the government.
So, how would THAT work? Find that hard to believe.
LOL believe it, just look up credit cards for the super rich, you will find a lot about it AND that the services hide many of the perks offered!
Now ask yourself why would a credit card perk be kept secret? Maybe to hide what a person buys or who they affiliate with amongst other things?
If you think it hard to believe you really have a lot to learn. The privilege of real wealth is far more than most understand.
I will cancel my Discover card for you and will be explaining why. I don’t use it much but it will be good to cancel it.
