Tesla plans to cut costs of next-generation cars in half

DETROIT (AP) — Tesla says it will cut the cost of its next generation of vehicles in half, largely by using innovative manufacturing techniques and smaller factories.

CEO Elon Musk and other executives outlined the goals during a 3 1/2-hour investor day presentation at Tesla’s Austin, Texas, headquarters Wednesday as they presented the company’s third master plan.

The changes could bring the cost of a new generation of vehicles to around $25,000. Many investors were hoping to catch a glimpse of the next-generation vehicles, but Musk said they wouldn’t be shown until a proper product unveiling.

“We’d be jumping the gun if we answer your question,” about the new vehicles, he told an analyst.

Shares of Tesla fell nearly 6 percent in after-hours trading during the presentation that ended just after 8 p.m. Eastern time.

I still won't want one. We don't have the grid or enough minerals for the battery

How's that Cybertruck with the unbreakable windows coming, Elon?

At $25K, I'd be interested in an electric vehicle for a second commuter car, but not for my primary means of transportation.

EVs are a 5-7yr “fad”, as they were in 1895-1915, eclipsed by steam and ICE.

The world’s mfgrs will have TRILLIONS in unsold inventory, parts and abandoned plants around the world, and no one will but the useless crap.

LOL, paying $25K for a turd is still as painful as paying $50K for a turd!

I like Teslas and all, but unless I had disposable income or won one of them in a lottery, I wouldn’t buy one.

Exactly. I would do it if I had a huge amount of disposable income, and purchased it as a “toy” or something with a focused use profile.

Same here. At a reasonable price it might be worth having a EV. I already have a diesel and gas powered so an electric would cover all the bases for me.

“EVs are a 5-7yr “fad”

You would be correct if normal market forces played out. The rats being in control subverts all. One by one the rat states are legislating the end of ICE car sales. Car makers are not going to make cars they can only sell in half of the states. Just about all have committed all EV fleets within 10 years that means they are already designing and planning toward that end.

Then they’ll start taxing gas up the wazoo, and impose higher insurance premiums on ICE cars.

The best way to cut the price of EV’s is to end the tax credits supporting EV’s (which always raise prices) and quit punishing ICE car use (the CAFE standards, carbon tax added for each gallon of gas refined from oil, the various state mandates prohibiting ICE cars at future dates, etc.).

I plan to buy one for in town driving when I need a replacement vehicle.
If they can really get highway level 5 working I might even decide the trade off between the inconvenience of recharging verses the convenience of napping makes it my preferred long distance travel vehicle.
That’s assuming I could really trust it enough to relax enough to sleep. That doesn’t seem very likely right now, but who knows?

I wouldn’t take one for free.

Electricity prices are skyrocketing around here.

Believe it when I see it. Musk must be counting the $7500 tax credit, production moving to Mexico and major battery reduction costs. From what I have read for a battery Tesla pays about a $142 per kw. Tesla battery’s run from about 57kw to 100kw. So that is $8,100 - $14,200. Of course, dropping the profit margin would help as well as it is currently $9,500 per car, 4 x their nearest rival.

“EVs are a 5-7yr “fad”, as they were in 1895-1915, eclipsed by steam and ICE.”

I disagree because new cars are so damn complicated due to EPA requirements to squeeze every last mpg out of a gallon of gas. An electric car doesn’t need a transmission or overly complicated internal combustion engine. It’s probably just a matter of time before some new battery tech comes around that makes electric cars a better fit for most trips ppl take. At the moment the expensive part of making an electric car is the battery pack. If the progress continues on improving range and decreasing costs goes on for another decade, I think market forces all by themselves will make ppl prefer electric cars. If you would toss on a range extender, like a gasoline generator then you also alleviate people’s range anxiety and they could adopt the car without reservation. Trains are like this already. They use diesel but the motors are electric.

And are you still going to have to spend $25K every 6 or 7 years for a new battery?

I’d be sorely tempted by Tesla if they had an ICE version.

And ditched the touchscreen for some real gauges.

“Musk said they wouldn’t be shown until a proper product unveiling”

I watched a YouTube video last night from Tesla that did show computer generated images of these less expensive models.
One reminded me of a subcompact Honda hatchback model(not sure the name).

Tesla is building a new factory in Monterey, MX.
