I had a black professor in my freshman year of college (1967-68). His name was Prof. White. Great guy Nobody paid any special attention to the fact he was black and he certainly didn’t whine about oppression or his grievances.

Excellent point. And...how black is black? How white is white? The answer is that anyone who says he’s black is, ipso facto, black. Tempting, given the perks just for being black. When the term “African-American” was the phrase of choice (after “Negro” was relegated to the trashcan of history (even though “Negro” means nothing other than “Black,” not a few whites who had moved to the U.S. with their parents could honestly check the “African-American” box. The colleges didn’t care; they preferred students who were qualified. Being able to suggest that the student’s ancestry was not what the feds had in ming, while meeting some tacit quota to get federal funds and be able to brag in their alumni magazine, was a secret joke between the student and the school.
