OAKLAND, Calif. - Barbara Nguyen can barely stand to drive anymore on Bay Area freeways. If a driver pulls up too close to her car, she slows down or speeds up to get away from them.
"I'm literally driving to work and I'm scared for my life," she said in a recent interview.
Her 28-year-old brother, Alameda County Sheriff's recruit David Nguyen, was shot and killed Jan. 4, 2022, near the Bay Bridge toll plaza – the first of 154 shootings across Bay Area freeways that year.
That's nearly double the number of freeway shootings in Los Angeles, which saw 77 last year.

There are a low number of shootings on LA area freeways because the shooters/criminals know in heavy bumper to bumper traffic, it’s difficult to get away quickly, and they know many cars today have cameras. The criminals in the bay area have always been notoriously stupid.
When Jerry Brown was mayor there, someone asked him why he had so much security. His answer - “there’s a lot of crime here”.
I’m glad I’m not there commuting anymore.
It’s all those white drivers that are the problem.

Plus, if you factor in number of freeway miles and time people spend on freeways (kind of a "per capita" basis), LA would be WAY WAY below the Bay Area.
I split time between our Bay Area place and our North Idaho place. I don't recall a single freeway shooting in North Idaho.
