I suspect that many of the industrial accidents we are seeing recently has a lot to do with those that “can do” retiring over the past few years. Those competent people are being replaced by those that “can’t and won’t” but are given a place of importance in companies that need to make sure they have a sufficient number of employees that check the correct boxes in order to satisfy the EEO regulations.
The new hires are aware that the former maintenance foreman simply walked around the manufacturing floor every other hour so they assumed that is the only thing which needed to be done. They have no idea that as he walked throughout the plant, the former maintenance manager noted floors that needed sweeping, gears that needed oil, frayed electrical wires that needed replacing, and machines that needed new belts installed. When he returned to his office, he sent out orders to have those repairs done or parts replaced asap. The new manager just returns to the maintenance office to check and see which Tik-Tok videos have been uploaded or how many text messages she has received. Thus the sudden uptick in manufacturing fires and disasters.
Such a hiring policy, which we now see in all public and private institutions, can only end in disaster.
Up late. Hate to hear this awful news. Prayers for all involved.
That's half of it.
I retired from a company that had been run by engineers and others who worked their way up from within the company.
When the VP in charge of our division, who had been in that position since the end of WWII, retired, a bean counter was hired to replace him.
Throughout the company business and accounting degree types were hired to replace all of the engineering types as retirements continued.
Few of the new hires understood maintenance and upgrades of equipment, dimensional control of products or training of people.
All they cared about was numbers, getting product out the door.
For about 10 years everything spiraled downward as all they cared about was the next quarter earnings.
Finally somebody in upper management must have figured it out and started hiring bright young engineers.
Everything was improving as I left.
Combine the EEO, ESG and DEI practices with bean counters running the show and it's amazing we don't have more disasters in manufacturing and transportation.
The cause is suspected to be a gas leak:

That pretty much sums up how and why these plants catch fire and burn to the ground, the new hires have no clue as to how the place works and just ape their way thru the job. if you don't know what "ape your way" thru a job is? Look it up.
I'm one those who get mad at people who think they know it all, because I actually do know it all.
The other problem is the quizlings..
No replacement for experience.
Absolutely on point. Taking care of business just isn’t in fashion any longer; it’s associated with those horrible Domineering White Male Christians. Those who are given this responsibility are now so often killing time until their ship sails in (they think) and they become an internet celebrity of some kind... They’re completely unencumbered by the duties found in reality.
