I’m not speaking of elders, many whom are quite able. Age discrimination is a real thing for sure.

Most here could care less that seniors have it rough. Most complaining are independently wealthy by inheritance.

That why euthanasia is celebrated by you and others because it will save on medical costs.

So sad. Maybe they’ll have to stop buying meat cuts that I can’t afford.

There’s nothing against an able elder who is actively seeking work but is not hired due to age discrimination. The employers are losing because the better workers many times are the older ones. Better work ethic and attitude. If wealthy on inheritance, most likely there’s no need for SNAP.

Rice and beans-a full protein. Isn’t that enough? What do wee owe these folks other than a chance to deal with their obesity? California’s rice farmers can feed them.

Such a nice and very Christian attitude - very conservative.

Scratch a hippy, get a Porsche.

Then you need to be clearer, else you fall into the ‘hating elders’ category, like so many others here - who, ironically, will also be elders one day.

Got it. Reminds me of a family member’s in-laws. Professionals in their 60s, living a life of entitlement attitude. Able to work but would rather draw benefits. Quote: “Why should I work when I can sit home on my butt for free?”

You’re right, I should have been clearer. Please forgive me. I’m a retiree myself, but am now self employed. From personal experience I know age discrimination is real so I decided to work at home. Elders are not valued in American society. I’m of Asian descent where the attitude is the complete opposite

Hmm, did you ever wonder if food retailer ever lobby for higher and more broadly distributed food stamps? I bet they never dictated stories to media stenographers.

Able bodied people need to pay for their own food.

A 50 lb. bag of rice and a 50 lb. bag of pinto beans...bon appetit!

There is definitely abuse of the social welfare programs, but truly needy American citizens will be hurt by this.

Why are we shipping tens of billions of dollars to Ukraine again?

I don’t celebrate euthanasia, just pointing out the obvious self destruction of our society.

The fine salt-of-the-earth people of SW Virginia turn their SNAP benefits into cash by using SNAP benefits to buy cases of soda and then selling them to convenience store owners for half the price.

Yeah, that works, although personally I occasionally splurge on generic ramen for a change of pace. /s

But more seriously, people are responsible for their most basic needs and there are ways of meeting those needs. I have little problem paying taxes to help others that are truly disabled. Everyone else needs to find a way.

There’s nothing wrong with rice and beans. It appears on my menu about once every six weeks. That also means leftovers, at least two meals worth. That’s a cup of dried rice, a cup of dry beans, an onion and seasonings. I get really wild sometimes and use different beans. I’m downright crazy with leftovers. Sometimes I make fried rice and bean cakes, or rice and bean burritos with leftover veggies thrown in and when I am down right mental I’ll top rice and beans with a fried dippy egg.

I don’t always eat that way. Last night I had an open faced pulled pork sandwich topped coleslaw. The pulled pork was homemade and so was the bread and coleslaw. That was about the 4th time I had leftover of the pulled pork. It was the second time I pulled it from the freezer. A pork butt goes a long way. Cabbage is still inexpensive and homemade coleslaw is just a few swipes away on the box grater - single serving so it doesn’t go bad and I can use the cabbage for other meals. Jeez, there’s all sorts of ways to make cabbage. Later this week will be fried perogies and cabbage.

I’m about to make brunch. No IHOP for me. I’m going to make a Johnny cake and eggs. It sucks that egg prices are still thru the roof, but eggs remain one of the least expensive sources of protein available- about $0.04 per gram. I usually eat three eggs everyday for breakfast/brunch. I switch how I make them and I don’t get tired of them.

Here’s yesterday’s breakfast. It’s only two eggs, but in the middle is homemade breakfast sausage, which meets my protein quota.

Cornmeal goes a long way too. About once every six weeks I make a loaf of cornmeal mush - that’s a cup of corn meal, water and seasoning.

Then there’s biscuits and gravy - dirt cheap when made from scratch. Here’s biscuits with scrapple gravy - ten times better than sausage gravy. Homemade scrapple is inexpensive since it uses hog innards. This pic is from last week. That’s three eggs with chives grown in the garden and dried.

Home made biscuits are inexpensive and quick to make - flour, butter, milk, baking powder & soda, and salt.

I should note that I am never hungry and my weight is stable even though I only eat two meals per day. I’m also not fat. A hot breakfast everyday holds me to dinner. I don’t eat junk food or snacks. Almost everything I cook is from scratch so there’s little process food, preservatives and chemicals. I do not worry about fats and cholesterol. My blood work is nearly perfect and my blood pressure is on the low side of the normal range.

Most importantly, I don’t spend much money on food while I still enjoy every meal.

Scratch is best! I see a key ingredient in the background of one photo...hot sauce. We make our own...delish.

Yeah, hot sauce really changes things up. Not pictured I have from the garden, homemade hot sauces: jalapeño & lime, Serrano (lacto-fermented), smoked poblano and garlic, mixed habanero & Thai chilies (lacto-fermented) and Carolina reaper. I only use the reaper sauce in dishes as I cook. Quite honestly, my super hot days are over. I make the reaper sauce mostly for when guests don’t think mild is manly enough. Habanero is my enjoyable limit. I can slather that stuff all over the place.
