Bulgaria will most likely sell a huge amount of ammunition to Ukraine through intermediaries, which could significantly impact the war, former defence minister Boyko Noev told bTV in an interview.
The caretaker Defence Ministry will transfer old ammunition worth nearly €175 million to the state military plant VMZ and, in return, will receive new ammunition, the ministry announced.
The goal is for the vast amounts of old ammunition from the warehouses of the Bulgarian army to go to Ukraine, the ex-defence minister, who is well acquainted with the arms business in the country, added.
“This is the largest rearmament of the Bulgarian land forces in recent history. That’s a huge amount of ammunition – hundreds of thousands. There is a huge increase in the prices of ammunition, and VMZ will sell this ammunition through intermediaries to Ukraine,” the former minister added.
“This is an amount of ammunition that can turn the tide of the war in some directions on the Ukrainian front,” he added.
The Bulgarian army has stockpiles of Soviet-standard ammunition, which the Ukrainian army needs to fuel its vast stockpile of Soviet-standard weapons, including tanks, howitzers, anti-tank grenade launchers, Soviet multiple rocket launchers, AK-47 rifles and more.
EURACTIV’s investigations have already reported that arms supplies to Ukraine worth billions of euros by Bulgaria have not stopped, despite the official claims of the authorities in Sofia.

Bulgaria was the first big Slavic empire - starting in the 7th century, though the Bulgar ruling class were Bulgars, a TurkiC people.
The Tsardom of Muscowy’s wars with the Ottomans in the 1700s and 1800s led to first the creation of Bulgaria as a de facto independent part of the Ottoman empire and then the Principality merged with Rumelia.
HOWEVER, in the early 1900s Bulgaria and Russia were on opposing sides:
1. Bulgaria threatened to conquer Constantinople — and the Russians sent troops to help the Turks prevent that (as they didn’t want another Slavic power to threaten Muscowy)
2. Bulgaria was on Germany’s side in World War 1 and 2 - against the Tsardom and then against the USSR.
3. Soviet Russia occupied Bulgaria after WWII and kept it under its thumb
So Bulgaria has definitely not been “always close” to Russia
The Ukrainians won
Against the Russian’s first plan - to decapitate Ukraine and create a vassal state - the Ukrainians defeated Putin’s army at the battle of Hostomel and of Kyiv
Against Putin’s plan B to create a landlocked Ukraine - this failed in June with the failure at Mykolaiv
Against Putin’s plan C to take the east bank of Ukraine - with failures at Kharkiv pushing the front-lines back - in September
Against Putin’s plan D to control Kherson - when the Russians retreated in November
Right now it is Putin’s plan E to keep the DPR, LPR and the land-bridge to Crimea. The jury’s still out on that
