To be charged over campaign finance violations, in a locale deemed a bastion of Democratic liberalism, risks turning Donald Trump into a political martyr, says Adrian Ang U-Jin of RSIS.

No one knows for sure how things will unfold. There is no precedent for criminal charges being laid against a former US president and a leading presidential candidate.

After all, Trump’s prosecution may be on flimsy legal grounds. In 2018, federal prosecutors considered but ultimately rejected charging Trump for campaign finance violations, in the belief that there was insufficient evidence against the former president to make charges stick.
To resurrect these old charges and prosecute him in a locale deemed a bastion of Democratic liberalism risks turning Trump into a political martyr and worsening the country’s political polarisation.

The deep state is trying to make another incident to outrage “we the people” so they can blame riots and destruction on conservatives.
In the name of “equity” a white DA should charge Obama with multiple crimes. Two can play this game. Of course only one side will be permitted to riot without consequence.
Mr. Adrian Ang U-Jin Sounds like a smart fellow.
We are in uncharted territory for the USA. There has been an unwritten, tacit agreement from George Washington that this crap was off limits. The Dems have striven to destroy every tradition of governance in the USA, the traditions we depend on for a stable political system. They couldn’t get rid of the filibuster, pack SCOTUS, indict Trump in federal court, convict him in two impeachments, or abolish the Electoral College. Now they turn to the most partisan state court jurisdiction in the country.
No matter how this turns out, it is bad for our Republic.
Well said.
The World Leaders are watching this crap show wondering why “We the People” continue to tolerate the actions of this administration - who are leading this charge against President Trump.
The state of Texas should indict Mayorkas.
The DNC is a clear and present danger to the Republic and is actively trying to destroy America.
Fla. should indict Fat Al.
Wyo. should indict Lizard Cheney.
Tejas should indict Xavier Becerra also.
Converting masses of formerly anti-Trumpers into Trump supporters is not further polarization.
You are on the right track. Some conservative DA (I don’t care what color) should indict both Obama and Biden for taking classified documents home with them. Both of them certainly did that. So do it, and do it now.
As you noted, two can - and should - play this game. But I doubt if it will happen.
Democrat leaders play hardball while Republican leaders play tee-ball.
But if one Trump support did something wrong ALL of us would be painted with the broad brush.
This is what it was like to be a Jew in preWar Germany
Okay, what jurisdiction has standing to do that?
If Democrats are trying to destroy the U.S. legal system, why should Conservatives try to help them?
I remember when everyone was saying there was going to be a ‘red wave’. Stop with the predictions!
Every state she indict Fauci and the whole Biden crime family. They should indict Schiff. There’s a whole bunch of them.
> Okay, what jurisdiction has standing to do that? <
That might be the tricky part. It has to be done right. But it has to be done.
> If Democrats are trying to destroy the U.S. legal system, why should Conservatives try to help them? <
That’s a fair point. But I’m sick and tired of seeing our side getting pummeled while Democrats skate time and time again. If they want to fight in the mud, so should we. But as I noted above, it has to be done right.
Yep.
Let’s get it on....
Agree with that, and it will really be bad if if they perp walk Trump. That would really harm the country not to mention the office of the President.
You want to see a real bank run?
Texas should declare war on New York.
