The first casualty of war is the truth and that’s the casualty I see here.
“The first casualty of war is the truth and that’s the casualty I see here.”
You mean like articles about the war published in TASS?
While I won’t vouch for its veracity alcoholism and incompetence from Russian soldiers is entirely plausible.

After the battle of Kursk, the Germans were retreating, falling back toward Kharkov. The Soviets captured a distillery that had three 50,000 gallon carboys of vodka. Three Soviet armies (about 200,000 men) were stopped dead in their tracks for three days as they emptied the carboys. This gave the Germans time to bring up some badly needed reinforcements. When the Soviet soldiers had more or less sobered up they attacked again suffering massive casualties from the newly arrived German reinforcements. The Soviets eventually took Kharkov but at a much higher price than if they had not spent three days in a drunken stupor.
