My grandfather served in the coast guard with Cesar Romero (gay, but not public about it at the time). The latter did not do anything queer while on the Bayfield and that sort of thing would have been known on a ship. Whatever gay sex took place had to be clandestine and while on liberty.

Cesar Romero... there is a name I haven't heard in years. He was one of a number of sexually odd individuals connected with the "Batman" TV series. I can remember my dad mumbling something I didn't quite understand to my mom during one episode, and she said, "Birds of a feather..."

Eventually, I figured it out.

I only recall hearing my vet relatives say a few things about this thread's topic, with most details mercifully lacking. At least among these lower, less well-connected ranks actually on the ground in the ETO, indulging in such proclivities was something that would get you sent somewhere - ANYWHERE - else, and damn fast.

One of the problems one uncle had was controlling the company's enlisted ranks whenever the unit was near a port or a major city. He is long gone, but my guess is that he would now give a little derisive snort, shake his head and then give them credit for just going after the women.

Probably not gay but promoted as such two years after he died by an author with a reputation for lying out his butt.
