GOP lawmakers want to protect Confederate monuments; others call it a legacy of white supremacy (FL)

The measure states that any person or entity that damages, destroys or removes a monument or memorial located on publicly owned property may be subject to civil liability, where they may be required up to three times the actual or compensatory damages.

The bill also says that if a memorial or monument is relocated, “it must be relocated to a site of similar prominence, honor, visibility and access” within the same county or city of where it was originally located.

There have been more than two dozen Confederate memorials removed in Florida since 2015, according to a 2022 report from the Southern Poverty Law Center. There are 77 that still remain.

The movement in Florida and the country to remove such controversial symbols was accelerated after the mass shooting at a Black church in Charleston, South Caroline in 2015. Shortly after that event, South Carolina lawmakers voted to remove the Confederate flag from their statehouse.

More Confederate monuments began coming down in 2017, including in Hillsborough County, where county commissioners deliberated for months about whether or not to remove a Confederate monument placed in front of a courthouse in downtown Tampa. They ultimately did so, but only after mandating that the private sector pay for the removal and removing of the monument.

The momentum to remove more Confederate monuments in places like Jacksonville, St. Augustine and Lakeland followed the protests over the death of George Floyd in the summer of 2020.

The proposal would also allow any legal resident of Florida or any nonprofit organization whose purpose is historical preservation from anywhere in the country the standing to bring a civil lawsuit against those responsible for moving a monument.

Why not have some land near Mt. Rushmore developed then all of these statues be placed there??
Call it AMERICAN HISTORY Park. Charge a small fee.

Idea has some merit. Does not have to be near Mt. Rushmore, but some place distinguished, maybe near Arlington or some other notable Civil Park.

Only reason I said Mt. Rushmore is that the state is RED!

SO why NOT support that state over the other LIBERAL SHIT HOLES that we have now? IMHO

“The momentum to remove more Confederate monuments in places like Jacksonville, St. Augustine and Lakeland followed the protests over the death of George Floyd in the summer of 2020.”

J’ville’s cowardly rino mayor circumvented city council and removed a few in the middle of the night......some are now on private property......since that the city council has kicked the can and won’t make a decision.

I can’t wait ‘till the blacks here find out the city was named after a revolutionary war era figure that owned as many as 300 slaves in his lifetime and would pay bonuses for captured runaway slaves to be whipped.

It’s gonna be epic.

That was the leaders back in the day. A civil
war and almost 100 years to get it revised.

What will happen when the Supreme Court holds affirmative action unconstitutional? Will those who support affirmative action have push back?

Agreed. There is also a very real opportunity for us to start winning a lot of African American votes. The Dems have thoroughly alienated the Black mainstream on issues like law and order and gay rights.

But every African American voter who is considering coming over to the conservative side is discouraged by how many Nathan Bedford Forrest posters are still hanging over here.

Does St. Augustine City have monuments to soldiers who died in other wars with similar prominence? If so I think it is OK to have a monument to these soldiers. However the monument should just be for the soldiers not the Confederacy.

There is also Jackson Square in New Orleans plus his statue.

Could be to many tourist $$$$$ for anything to happen there.

But when your stronghold votes come from the South..

Ifor one, will never vote for Haley, even if Hillary is the opposition.

Haley could have nipped this in the bud but it wasn’t her country’s history.

Political dereliction of duty allowed the fire-eating miscreants of abolitionists and planters to stumble us into civil war in April 1861. Few Southerners defended slavery, but all opposed any faction using the federal government to impose its will on individuals by armed conquest. This bloodiest of all our conflicts determined a political destination, but without resort to reason, contemplation, or mutual understanding. The United States lost the Civil War and much of the destiny envisioned by our Founding Fathers remains unrealized.

Great men like Grant, Lee, Sherman, and Johnston, and their soldiers and sailors should always be honored for resolving what should have been political issues. Monuments North and South testify to the sincerity of those who endured the tragedy of that struggle.

Trivia question: which constitution outlawed the slave trade—US or Confederacy’s?
