The Department of Justice has opened a criminal investigation into the leak of documents that "appear to contain sensitive and highly classified material," a Defense Department spokesperson said Sunday. The Pentagon was also still assessing the validity of the documents, the spokesperson said.
"An interagency effort has been stood up, focused on assessing the impact these photographed documents could have on U.S. national security and on our Allies and partners," Pentagon deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh said in a statement. "Over the weekend, U.S. officials have engaged with Allies and partners and have informed relevant congressional committees of jurisdiction about the disclosure."
A document marked "top secret" that shows the daily disposition of forces in Ukraine was leaked and began showing up on social media, a U.S. official confirmed Friday.
The official said that someone apparently took a picture of the document and posted it on the social media platform Telegram before it was then picked up on Twitter.

“Justice Department opens criminal investigation into leaked Pentagon documents that “appear to contain sensitive and highly classified material””
Some kind of high-stakes game is being played here, but I haven’t been able to figure out just what it is.
Is this kinda like a US General calling the Chinese?
A date would help.
What, I thought they were all forgeries intended to make Ukraine look bad?
The DOJ sucks. So do the weirdos at the Pentagon.
Just like every other instance of sensitive document leaks, the calls are coming from inside the house.
I’m not sure of their ultimate goals, but I suspect someone on the right is going to be hung out to dry and they are going to use the “leaks” as an excuse to limit social media posts by conservatives. Temporarily of course, and just until the chance of sensitive war-time information being given to Russia is no longer a risk.
Trump should announce that he will pardon the leaker.
Same thing that happened under Clinton
How about they find the Supreme Court leaker.
This investigation will be handled by the same team that found the Supreme Court leaker.
With the same results.
Or maybe they can blame Trump.
“Is this kinda like a US General calling the Chinese?”
No. The general that called his counterpart with the Chinese and confirmed for them there was no attack coming from the US against them was doing his job. He was being paid for diplomatic relations, not covert operations. At the time of his call he was being film monitored, voice recorded, witnessed, and put on a delay for on the run editing. The US has a number of people that do this.
But the US does, also, have a number of covert programs going continually and has for at least a century. And of course using the words “appear to” by CBS news is just a teaser to get the reader to assume something and is not new with them. The toss has hit the wall.

But remember, don't believe any of it. It's all disinformation. None of it is true. Someone probably just made it up to make the U.S. look bad.
But they need to investigate who leaked the information that isn't true.
So, the leakage obviously contained something the left dislikes?
We will investigate ourselves and find no malfeasance.

It also demonstrates that the supposedly Ukraine-friendly DOD leaks like a sieve to Ukraine’s detriment.

The potential of whistleblowers and defectors causes the Nazi oligarchs to run shrieking through the streets.
So treason is his job? under his new boss, that is technically correct, but at the time it should've gotten him chucked in Leavenworth!
