An outside review of ballot printing mishaps in Maricopa County during the 2022 midterm elections that caused long lines and vote tabulation delays in critical Arizona races blamed the headaches on printer failures and paper ballot thickness.
Maricopa County, which includes the Phoenix area, contains 60% of Arizona’s voters and has been a hotbed for election denialism in the last two cycles. Former President Donald Trump alleged widespread fraud in Maricopa County tipped the state to President Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election, while failed 2022 GOP gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake has cited Maricopa County election woes in her unsuccessful efforts to overturn her loss to now-Gov. Katie Hobbs (D-AZ).
The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors commissioned former Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice Ruth McGregor in January to spearhead an investigation into why printers in the area had performance issues during the general election after operating successfully in the primaries. Nearly a quarter of the Election Day voting centers in the area had issues with tabulating or printing ballots.
McGregor's report attributed the Election Day failures to older printers being unable to maintain heat levels necessary to print ballots dark enough to be read by on-site tabulators and the length and thickness of the ballots causing the printers to fail.
“This report is exactly what we needed. An unbiased analysis of what happened and a range of recommendations for what to do next,” Board of Supervisors Vice Chairman Jack Sellers said in a statement. “Whether it’s replacing printers, using different paper, or changing the way we test equipment before an election, you can be sure our Board will take any steps necessary to ensure in-person voters have the experience they deserve in 2024.”
The county has vehemently denied accusations of malfeasance or allegations that its election oversight altered outcomes.

Pure spin . The breakdown of the printers was in heavy Republican areas and deliberate.
>“This report is exactly what we needed.”
Yeah, but it’s obvious the problem is that you purposefully misprinted ballots so that you could then block the ones you wanted.
OK, it was definitely the problem, and it was OBVIOUSLY deliberate. NOW WHAT?
McGregor’s report attributed the Election Day failures to older printers being unable to maintain heat levels necessary to print ballots dark enough to be read by on-site tabulators

Ballots and printers which ordered themselves without any input or oversight by the Sec. of State.
Ping
And?
Wasn’t there some kind of question about supposedly counterfeit ballots with incorrect dimensions and unofficial origin?
Just axin
Had this happened in a heavily Democratic precinct you know there would have been nonstop stories about voter disenfranchisement and public protests by Democrats.
Funny how these “mistakes” always seem to work against the GOP.
Excellent investigation, Emily. You convinced me: it was nothing but "mishaps" that just so happened to be made by the person running against Lake.
As I understand it, in Maricopa County you could go to any precinct to vote, and the election staff would custom print you a ballot to match your address, with all of the correct local races and ballot questions.
The official line is some volunteer staff changed the print settings on Adobe Acrobat, which resulted in the ballots being printed slightly undersized, and the optical scanners couldn't find the right location of the checkboxes and rejected the ballots.
Those ballots were then put in a separate box for hand counting at the end of the evening, or the voter was given the option to try another polling location. Many walked away but never went to another polling place to attempt to vote again.
“...older printers being unable to maintain heat levels necessary to print ballots dark enough to be read by on-site tabulators”
Did you write “This part sounds reasonable.” Are you NUTS? The whole system should have been tested, retested, and challenged in every way possible. Then tested some more. Those sort of problems should have been uncovered MONTHS before the election.
There is nothing “reasonable” about any of these lame excuses.
It was all intentional designed to steal the election from Lake. Even if they failed to do the necessary testing early enough, THAT was intentional, too. Somebody knew these older printers wouldn’t work. Why did they suddenly just happen to have these problems all at once in the 2022 election? Were there no hints of these types of failures in previous elections?
The whole election stinks to high heaven.
Older printers that apparently worked fine during the primary elections.
So they purposely screwed up settings the night before in areas
“Responsible”? Not hardly. The immediate cause perhaps, but “responsible” is a loaded word.
“Had this happened in a heavily Democratic precinct you know there would have been nonstop stories about voter disenfranchisement and public protests by Democrats. “
EXACTLY
Where are the Republicans -I mean RINOS- on THIS??!!
I'll tell you where, and you already know the answer. They were perfectly fine with Trump losing the Presidency and with Lake losing the Governorship.
