Sadly, fences and gates don’t keep the dopers out. If they want to steal something, they will go over or under the best fence you can build. A few years ago, a drunk woman climbed my 5’ chain link fence and was still trying to pull the storm door off when the cops got here. Another time, a young teenage boy, about 13, knocked on the door. After we saw he was alone, we let him in. We called the Sheriff and they took him to a shelter. It all just depends on the situation. My husband is almost 85 and there is NO way I’m opening the door for a stranger after dark.
Shooting somebody for pulling into your driveway or knocking on your door is NEVER ok. I’m not saying that it is. It has never been ok in rural communities to be outside of somebody’s house after dark either. There are people that will shoot you for it, not that it’s ever right. TN law says they have to be in your house uninvited for it to be legal, as it should be. We don’t have much violent crime like they do in big cities, but we do have meth cookers that will steal anything they can to finance the dope. Most steal outside stuff and won’t break into a house unless they know you aren’t home.
Nobody has bothered us in a long time, but they do on other farms. We have a community FB page and people post security cam video of people that prowl around after dark. We have obvious security cams all over the place. They know they are being recorded.
Country people rarely go outside after dark unless they have a cow calving or coyotes after the chickens. LOL They don’t expect strangers coming around after dark either.
That’s how most country people are! We would do the same. Every situation is different. Rural people are extremely cautious after dark, with good reason, but they are mostly very friendly.
It’s not just caution about people either. My sister was visiting and took her little dog out to pee after dark one night. They got chased back in by a pack of coyotes while only 30 feet from the door.
If I go out after dark, I always carry a firearm. I went out one night because my dogs were barking. I didn’t take a flashlight. I wandered into a dark spot and sensed something standing in front of me. I backed up into the security light and it came with me. It was a HUGE Brahma bull that had escaped his fence and was standing nose-to-nose with me. I kept backing up to the house. I called a neighbor to ask about it and he knew who owned it. The owner showed up with a trailer and loaded him up. He laughed and said, “he’s friendly”.
It’s not just people you worry about in the dark in the country. It’s common sense here to carry a firearm outside after dark. Some think it’s OK to shoot first and look later for some reason. It’s not.
