Parking garages across the US could be at risk of collapse over the weight of heavier electric vehicles, experts warned, as one such garage fell in Lower Manhattan, killing one person and injuring five.
Chris Whapples, a structural engineer and consultant working on new regulations for multi-story garages in the UK, said officials need to understand how the rise in EVs will affect current car parks.
“I don’t want to be too alarmist, but there definitely is the potential for some of the early car parks in poor condition to collapse,” Whapples told The Telegraph.
“Operators need to be aware of electric vehicle weights, and get their car parks assessed from a strength point of view, and decide if they need to limit weight.”

unintended consequence of our conversion to electric cars?
Have any of you, thought about the weight limits, engineering,etc., of parking garages, in conjunction with electric cars?
Add to that the fire danger from EVs.
I thought it was the Bee.
EV’s eat tires because of the added weight.....................
And to that add strain on the roads bridges and overpasses. Everything these cock roaches get their hands on.
Battery Weight
But for perspective it also weighs 600 lbs less than our 2005 6-cyl ICE pickup. And of course about 1,000 lbs less than my first car from 1974. LOL
So if it's a newer parking deck in a dense city where small cars are the norm, then yes switching many of them to EV's would be a weight issue. But if it's a parking deck here in Alabama where over half the cars are pickup trucks, then many of them converting to EV's would be a non-issue.
According to the EPA, the average Car/SUV in the U.S. weighs somewhere around the 3,750-pound level, about 200 or so pounds more than a Tesla Model 3, but significantly less than most of the other Tesla models on offer.
These are unsurvivable accidents with crushed, flattened bodies and white hot, unquenchable chemical fires. Lithium is highly reactive. Put a chunk of pure lithium n a bucket of water and it will explode.
And how will crumbling road and bridges be maintained? In many places, gas and diesel taxes are the funding source for the ongoing maintenance.
As we shift to electric cars, gas and diesel taxes will decline as fewer internal combustion vehicles are on the road. There will be new taxes but I haven’t heard how they plan to tax electric vehicles.
The battery pack of a Tesla weighs between 1000-1100 lbs.
Multiply that time 500 or more cars.
Ban EVs from parking garages. Must park in the open parking lot.

Did you read about the Tesla in a high speed crash? Think it was out in CA or similar area. It crashed as it left the roadway and went airborne while scattering the 700+ cell phone sized built in batteries through the air. Some of the batteries impacted on an apartment complex and set multiple units on fire!!!
Heck yea!!!! Fireworks are not a fault but a feature, at no extra cost.
Not just parking decks but all roadways. More weight = more wear to pavement.
Also, be ready for increased insurance premiums, because a heavier object causes more damage when it collides with another. Its called physics.
Your gonna pay more even if you never own an EV.

Put the EV sales on hold until all our roads and bridges are upgraded.
If weight of EVs is a problem for parking garages, then obviously they’ll wreak havoc on regular roads and bridges.
