Group claims members went around Beacon Hill deflating SUV tires in climate-change protest last night

Tyre Extinguishers, a British group whose preferred method of fighting climate change is to deflate the tires of large vehicles, says it let the air out of the tires of 43 vehicles on Beacon Hill last night.

The group took this action to render the large greenhouse gas emitting vehicles unusable, directly preventing the outpouring of emission from the vehicles into our atmosphere which further contribute to climate change and air pollution. Only large, luxury, gas powered SUVs were targeted by the group; no tires were deflated on electric or hybrid vehicles nor any vehicles with handicap signage. The group left leaflets on the cars to inform the owners about why their vehicle was impacted, imploring them to stop using their SUVs and switch to public transportation, biking, or smaller compact electric and hybrid cars.

Rather than slicing open tires, participants use lentil seeds or similar:

When you drop a lentil in a valve stem cap and screw the cap back on, the air will slowly leak out of the tire.

Beacon Hill of course is that upscale area
near the MA State House. Home to that
bar “where everybody knows your name”
and one of John Kerry’s mansions

It was pointed out in comments people can just reinflate tires using a $30 bicycle
pump in their trunk.

Asses. But better lentil seeds than puncture or slash.

You want to have to do all 4 tires with a bike pump?

I’m telling ya, have four stickers on each tire that says, Warning! This tire is filled with CO2 gas!

Does this sort of action really endear anyone to the cause of global warming?

Does anyone whose tires are deflated decide that , OMG , I really need to rethink the vehicle I drive?

Why did they exempt handicap plate vehicles from this protest? So if someone is crippled then it’s okay for them to drive an evil SUV?

The first instinct is to try to catch these scumbags in the act, and respond accordingly. But the odds of doing so are poor - most of us don’t park our vehicles to stand guard over them. This is organized criminal activity, and law enforcement better have a plan to respond.

In Keene NH lib Deborah “Arnie” Arnesen
had a local political talk radio show
where she referred to SUVs as “FUVs”. She
was let go either because of lousy
ratings—or a big station sponsor was a
car dealer.

I'd rather have the tire slashed and know immediately that I'm not going anywhere than start out on a trip only to get stranded by the side of a freeway in the middle of the night with a lentil seed stuck inside my tire stem. Either way, it's vandalism and someone's day is going to be messed up.

Well if you have a green valve stem cap your tires have been inflated with nitrogen - so there’s that.

Although working within our corrupt and worthless system is usually beneath my contempt, you may be right this time if lawsuits will cause suffering to the criminals who did this.

If not, then back outside the wimpy system “to walk forthrightly into the bright sunshine of human rights.” that Hubert Humphrey referred to in his 1948 speech.

(He meant kissing up to the Dem wing that wanted to overrun states’ rights in order to boost civil rights to pander to black votes, but the line still looks good.)

We now have criminal rights but no human rights such as for victims and future victims.

What a dumb protest idea. I wonder what the owners of electric and hybrid vehicles would say if somebody let the air out of their tires and left a sign on the window telling them that their batteries contain cobalt mined by child laborers.

Or a $15 12 volt compressor...

The irony here is that, if you have to fill all four tires with a 12VDC compressor, chances are you are going to have to start the vehicle so you don’t discharge the battery.

So take the time it takes to inflate a large tire from empty, times 4, times every vehicle they hit - that’s the amount of pointless idle time emitting CO2 into the atmosphere and, IIRC, idling is one of the least efficient modes of engine operation.

Makes about as much net sense as flying a private jet to climate convention.

The climate change loonies have no idea that their efforts, are counterproductive.

Those tires are made from petroleum by-products, meaning that, more petroleum will have to be used to create more tires. Idiots!

Not particularly. But 12v electric pumps are cheap and widely available. Or large cans of aerosol sealers are cheap. You should have that stuff anyhow. I do. This is only an inconvenience unless one is an unprepared idiot.

And the carbon footprint for the gasoline or diesel powered portable air compressors needed for re-inflation?
