Nobody fought to free blacks. They fought to shove Washington DC down everyone else's throats. Freeing blacks was an afterthought.
Make it $140 Trillion in reparations for each black American and then we'll be all squared up. Surely senile Sleepy Joe will sign that $140-Trillion Reparations Bill because as far as Sleepy Joe knows, the U.S. has a huge national credit and a huge budget surplus, so the U.S. can easily absorb a little payment like that.
I just hope that in the year 2500, we Americans are still constantly talking about Reparations every four years. It's the same-o, same-o guilt-trip that all Democrats suddenly start talking up as we approach another Presidential Election season, along with the regularly scheduled "institutional racism" and "systemic racism" accusations solely meant to get out the 95+% black vote for Democrats. (Hey, it always works for Democrat politicians, that's why they do it. If it didn't work, they wouldn't even waste their time trying it.)
They didn't fight and die for that reason. They fought and died to force Washington DC control onto people that were sick of it. Freeing the slaves was an afterthought.
They didn't make "freeing slaves" a policy of the war until nearly two years into it, and then they only "freed" the slaves in the areas still under "rebellion." (fighting against Washington DC control.)
As William Seward (Lincoln's secretary of state) said at the time:
""We show our sympathy with slavery by emancipating slaves where we cannot reach them and holding them in bondage where we can set them free."
The London Spectator was even worse.

I understand that the 40 Million blacks in the US make up the wealthiest black nation in the world. Maybe reparations should be based on the difference between how blacks are currently doing in the country of their origin compared to how blacks are doing in the US?
Phil is exactly right. The problem is, the influx of gold-toothed money all at once into the system would cause Zimbabwean-style hyper-inflation and would crash the global supply-and-demand system. We would be fortunate to narrowly avert a global war in such a circumstance.

Yes, the Southern states were paying 72% of the taxes and they wanted out of the deal. Washington DC offered them permanent protection for slavery (the Corwin Amendment) but they turned it down.
The war was fought to keep the Southern states under the economic dominance of the Northeastern power "elite", which are pretty much the same people oppressing us today.
Every leftist university endowment should be liquidated first.

My family never owned slaves. We settled in NE Kansas and cleared and farmed the land ourselves in 1837. If this guy wants to give money away I suggest he start with his own.
They did quite a bit. They produced the cotton, tobacco, indigo, hemp and other export products that ended up paying 72% of the total tax burden for the nation in the 1850s.
60% of that money they produced went to New York and Washington DC where it was presumably spent on other things. Ironically, New York and DC were making more money off of slavery than the actual plantations which had to content themselves with 40% of the total revenue produced by slaves.
Blacks were the ultimate source for all that revenue. (65 million paid in 1860, if I recall correctly.)

The reason why the North didn’t want slavery in the new territories was racism. They wanted the new territories to be free, clean and white. No blacks wanted.
