The latest tax migration data from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) shows that the exodus of taxpayers from high-tax states continued from 2020 to 2021, with California, New York, and Illinois again suffering some of the nation’s biggest losses of people and money.
California’s tax base shrank by nearly $29.1 billion as the Golden State saw a net loss of 332,000 taxpayers and their dependents during a time of widespread lockdowns, stay-at-home orders, and business closures, according to the IRS migration data released Thursday.
In second place was New York, which was hit by a net loss of $24.5 billion and 262,000 people. Illinois was third, with a net loss of $10.9 billion and 105,000 people. Other high-tax states such as Massachusetts ($2.6 billion) and New Jersey ($2.3 billion) also saw tens of thousands of people moving out during the period.

Of course, it is one's hope that those leaving the blue states are conservatives escaping rather than progressives who are just abandoning the nest that they fouled only to go to red states and repeat their voting mistakes.

Sadly, the biggest losers are those of us who are receiving the refugees from those failed states. I for one would love to see checkpoints at the borders, turning back every car with Illinois plates. Let them stew in the mess they voted to create.
What you’re forgetting is that the first refugees from these high-tax states are employed people who earn a lot of money and are moving with a job — or even an entire business. These are not the kind of voters who made these dumps what they are.

You do realize, don’t you, that not every voter in Illinois voted for the Democrats who control the state?
Ditto for Upstate NY. Because we don’t have a county by county electoral college, we are outnumbered by the downstate city rat leftards.
We are outnumbered by Chicago and Cook County.
Based upon the reports of new red-state residents registering as Republicans when they arrive, I believe the majority of those leaving blue states are conservatives who have finally had enough and are simply escaping. Many couples retired earlier than planned due to the pandemic and moved their escape plans up by a year or two. Some found work-from-home jobs that allows them to leave the high-tax, high-crime blue states and keep their job.
So these are not all liberal progressives who are making these moves.
I suggest you take a look at the red/blue map in Illinois. 5 Counties regularly outvote the entire rest of the State. Lance the blue hives in Cook Count and E St Louis and Illinois is solid red.

It is risky business taking in Yankees; I'll grant you that.
But I have to think we are probably getting the best of what's available.
The key is for your legislature to pass anti-woke legislation and get Newsome or some such to denounce your state to national audiences. Florida just got lucky and some ball player announced he was fleeing the state because he was skeered to death.
If there is a snake bite or alligator attack in your state, makes sure it gets played up on the national news. Good publicity like that will help keep some people from drifting in.
I keep hearing that, but I’m not seeing it. What I’m seeing is the kind of expats we’re getting from Illinois don’t think West Garfield Park is s#!++y enough, they want to make wherever they move more like West Adams or Compton.

I agree. But there are some on this thread who think those moving away are liberal progressives who will bring their voting habits with them. I appreciate their concern; but I must challenge their lumping the good transplants with the bad together in one pot. The fact is that many conservatives are leaving those broken blue states for redder pastures, and I applaud their move.

I am a realtor and I deal with a LOT of refugees from California and Washington State. They are not libtard nutjobs. They are smart business types and understand that they are being driven out of business in their home states.
They are moving to stay in business and hate dimrats.
It’s a good point that those fleeing the high tax states are usually upper middle income earners. TX, Fl and other refuge states are getting people who have money to spend, are productive citizens, aren’t involved in crime/drugs, and aren’t going to be a burden on the welfare system. I moved from MS to FL several years ago in part because of the state income tax. MS isn’t anywhere like CA or NY, but it’s still got a state income tax that was taking too much of my money. Now I spend my money in Florida instead of MS. Tax revenues are just a small part of the downside to losing high earners. CA and NY are steadily trending towards becoming states with a few rich people and a whole bunch of welfare bums.
