Pornhub blocks access in Utah to challenge age verification law

Utah's age verification law, which targets publishers distributing material deemed to be "harmful to minors on the internet," has gone into effect. As a response, MindGeek has chosen to block everyone in the state from being able to access its websites, including Pornhub. As Motherboard reports, if somebody with a Utah IP address accesses Pornhub, they'll now be met with a video of adult performer Cherie DeVille. In it, DeVille explained that the company believes requiring users to submit their government IDs isn't the most effective solution to protecting its users and could even put their privacy at risk.

She continued that "mandating age verification without proper enforcement" has driven users to other sites with fewer safety measures in states with the same law. MindGeek believes that the most effective solution to identify users is by doing so through their device. "Until a real solution is offered, we have made the difficult decision to completely disable access to our website in Utah," DeVille said, ending the video with a plea for residents in the state to contact their representatives and demand device-based verification solutions.

Of course a VPN (or any out of state proxy) defeats the block. And I'm 100% sure Pornhub management knows that. The question is do Utah legislators know that?

I applaud the motive, but such a thing is utterly unenforceable.

“but such a thing is utterly unenforceable.”

Absolutely, and the question is what will be next?

Every device has parental controls. All adult sites send out cookies that trigger these parental controls. This responsibility belongs to the parents not the government.

To quote a friend who agrees with you...

“They’ll use it as a foil to try to agitate for their “Internet driver’s license” which they’ve been trying to get for decades. But the objective itself will not succeed.”

“Submit a picture of your government ID, please. We will keep it 100% safe. Trust us.”

Sure, uh huh.

Sounds like the law is working well.

To you perhaps. As is noted earlier, easily defeated. Another feel good law that accomplishes nothing. But it pleases the sheeple.

Is this like cutting off your ….[something] to spite your … date? Or mate?
Can’t work out the corollary.

The owners of Porn Hub should be made to stand before a Utah firing squad.

As Gary Gilmore used to say, "Let's do it!"

We’ll see. We’ve had laws in the past against selling Penthouse to 8 year olds, so we’ll see how this works out.

It will not stop it or slow it one bit, so it is completely unneeded. Does anyone actually believe the government is going to only use it for porn?

Mark my words... Give them an inch and they will take a mile. Won’t be long before certain controversial “ideology” will be classified as “porn”.

This is just a stepping stone to more control and regulations. How many times are we going to fall for these con jobs disguised as moral protections? Patriot Act, Freedom Act, Etc.

Watch... It will not be good at all in the long run.

But there you had a physical object with a precise location.

All pre-internet laws against pr0n (and indeed arguments against such laws) assumed one would have to go out and spend money to get it.

Times change, but concepts remain. If people need their porn, they can comply, just as before.

Here’s a great idea, and a dream. The ransomware creeps reach out to every known porn site and block them. But, never tell them the amount to unblock. Yes, yes, I know, free speech, etc. Okay, how about blocking every child porn site (just typing those two words together, child porn, makes me want to destroy the keyboard).

I’m for anything that makes life more difficult for Pornhub in any way. No way should that filth be available to all people at all times.

SLC has changed quite a bit in the last 20 years. I wonder how many Mormons are left in that area.
