BMW recalls 90,000 vehicles over "dire" risk from explosive Takata air bag inflators
CBS News ^ | 5/5/23 | staff

BMW is warning the owners of about 90,000 older vehicles in the U.S. not to drive them due to an increasing threat that the air bags might explode in a crash.

The warning covers vehicles from the 2000 through 2006 that previously had been recalled to replace faulty and dangerous air bag inflators made by Takata. The company used ammonium nitrate to inflate the air bags in a crash. But the chemical can deteriorate over time when exposed to heat and can blow apart a metal canister, hurling shrapnel that can injure or kill drivers and passengers.

Models involved in the recall include the 2000 through 2006 3 Series, the 2000 through 2003 5 Series and the 2000 through 2004 X5. All have driver's front air bag inflators made by Takata.

Years ago, Jeep had the same problem with the Takata airbags, and recalled many thousands.

Why is Takata still in business?

Millions of vehicles have been recalled due to Takata airbags. I had a 2008 Ford Edge that was recalled in 2018. There was a waiting list for replacement airbags. I drove a Chevy Equinox LT rental for free for 6 weeks. Good vehicle and I racked up a lot of miles on it due to traveling back and forth to a new house we were refurbing. Ford footed the bill no questions asked.

I had a Honda from that era that was recalled for Takata airbag replacement.

This recall has been out there for years - I had the airbag in my 2004 E46 M3 replaced. It’s free, and it doesn’t take much time.

“This recall has been out there for years.”

Yes. BMW’s and other vehicles with Takata airbags have previously been a subject of recalls. But, this is apparently a new recall and warning.

if I read correctly it is the driver airbag they are worried about now. you had the passenger bag replaced, as did I a few years ago.

I had assumed it was the drivers airbag on recall and was surprised when they did the passenger one.

I remember reading an article saying that the REPLACED airbags still weren’t properly stabilized...this might be the beginning of something big.
