Actually, they're legal in more states than not.

You need an enhanced background check, $200 tax stamp, local sherrif has to sign off and there are other restrictions.

If approved, they are expensive.

That is not correct, you need to complete a BATF Automatic weapons application, pay the tax/fee, ($200.00 per full auto firearm, per year I believe) and properly store your automatic weapons, and agree to on-site inspection on BATF demand.

So you can own them, if you can afford them, the annual fees and the ammo it takes to feed them.
