A Connecticut state representative and a wrong-way driver were both drunk behind the wheel when they were killed in a fiery crash just hours after the politician’s swearing-in ceremony in January, according to officials and state police.

State Rep. Quentin Williams, 39, a Democrat from Middleton who had just been sworn into a third term, died on the morning of Jan. 5 as he was heading home from Gov. Ned Lamont’s inaugural ball in Hartford.

Williams’ Infiniti Q60 burst into flames after it was struck head-on by 27-year-old Kimede Mutafaj driving her Toyota Corolla the wrong way on Route 9 in Cromwell around 12:45 a.m.

Thank heavens they managed to kill each other rather than several truly innocent people which is the usual case.

They didn’t say what Williams measured, but it probably wasn’t that high. The .08% level is very low, and an experienced drinker can drive home safely with blood alcohol well above the limit. The other guy was obviously completely blitzed.

Surprisingly he has not been misgendered as a Republican.

Just like the punchline of the old joke,” Don’t worry. What are the odds of there being two serial killers in the same car?”

Route 9 in Cromwell? I know that highway. Route 9 must be the only limited access highway with a stoplight. I had a rear ender there once and about 15 close calls. Cromwell North is great, downtown Middletown has the traffic lights, Southern Middletown to Old Saybrook Route 9 is great. Route 154 is the best way from Middletown to Old Saybrook. Lots of small hot dogs stands...

Dang, his car looks as bad (actually worse) as her car. I won’t post the pictures.

Interesting details about each driver - be forewarned before you go there - there are pictures of both cars.

Yikes

Not a mystery. He was drunker than she was (but BOTH way over the limit) and going nearly 86 mph - she was somewhat slower by about 30 mph BUT she was in the wrong lane going the wrong way.

I’ve never figured out how that happens on a highway. A dark city street maybe it can happen (when they’re divided).

That information wasn’t yet available yesterday when I looked for it. Thanks for the update.

Alcohol and marijuana and driving . . . sounds like a real party. Great decisions all around.

Williams had the higher alcohol level and was driving 85mph:

Oh wow. I missed the weed part.

He had just been partying at a re-election thing for the governor(?).

And that woman was on the wrong side of the road - so I’ll put most of the blame on her.

I don’t know if it would have been survivable even if he was sober and driving the speed limit. Lots of heavy damage on both cars (combined impact speed at least 135mph - maybe from the data in the cars?)

There were multiple calls about her being on the wrong side of the road. And a near-miss from a guy who pulled all the way onto the shoulder.
