Poor business planning was the cause of its demise. It was actually an interesting concept and not too badly executed as an immersive experience. But, the pricing model made it more expensive than a cruise on one of their ships. If they had priced it in the category of a higher end hotel on their property it would have been perpetually sold out. The market for it ended up being extremely wealthy Star Wars fanatics. Once that limited target group had all had a stay at the hotel then there was no more market left to serve.

As to the cancellation of the Lake Nona Disney office park, the push back from the Imagineers was immediate after it was initially announced. Many of them quit rather than relocate their family across the country. Disney immediately pulled back and then used COVID as the blame for the delay on the project. Now they are blaming DeSantis but that is just a convenient excuse. They had been looking at a way to backtrack from this decision long before the feud.

Disney executives are showing that they not only have lacked an understanding of their market, but even their employees.

This post provides a good breakdown of likely business goals and motivations connected to that project.

I have to remember just because I don’t have $2. Million Dollars to take the family on a “ quick weekend of Sci-Fi fun, doesn’t mean many others don’t have it. Good for them, if they have achieved that kind of wealth.

I think where Disney really mishandled the Star Wars franchise is focusing so much on their movies (7, 8, 9). Most of the older fans (i.e. those with money) have nostalgia for the original and prequel trilogies and the toys, books, comics, video games, and lore from that time. They want to see characters and callbacks to the content they watched and the toys they played with.

The hotel failed because it featured only characters from the sequels, which are despised by a majority f Star Wars fans.

Nobody wanted to see Rey, Kylo etc. or that era .
They wanted Han, Luke and Leila. Storm Troopers.
But Kathleen Kennedy wanted to destroy Star Wars and she has done so.
Most of the attractions of the hotel were supposed to be in GalaxyS Edge for free.

The price was way too damn high. Less than 48 hours cost 6 k.

The quality of experience was poor and too many things were expensive add ones.
