"KYIV, May 21 (Reuters) - Ukraine said on Sunday that its forces were still advancing around the edges of Bakhmut, aiming to encircle the ruined eastern city after Moscow congratulated the Wagner private army and Russian troops for capturing it.

Russia said on Saturday it had completely taken Bakhmut, which, if confirmed, would mark an end to the longest and bloodiest battle of the 15-month war. Russian President Vladimir Putin praised his regular troops and the Wagner group.

On Sunday, however, a top Ukrainian general said Kyiv's forces still controlled what he accepted was an "insignificant" part of Bakhmut, although that would allow them to enter the city when the situation changed......"

Ukraine is pushing at the shoulders of it’s salient toward Bakhmut, not moving to encircle.

They want to encircle, but the action probably isn’t quick enough. Wagner will likely press forward, and/or spread out to support the flanks. But anything is possible.

I doubt it because Ukrainians talk too much and brag about what they are doing.

It seems Russia has achieved its goal of taking the Donbass.

It’s long past time for a peace deal. Russia keeps the captured territories in exchange for leaving the rest of Ukraine intact.

Small price to pay considering Russia could decide to take ALL of Ukraine and then Transnistria but I don’t think the Russian people have the will.

They tasted a bit of freedom and do not want to go back to the Soviet days. Rather, let the USA become the new Soviet Homosexuals of America and watch it disintegrate.

For months it was widely reported here that Ukraine “aimed” to defeat Wagner Group and to control the city.

Can you please explain how Wagner, a band of criminals, pirates and mental cases, just annihilated NATOs best trained army? What the hell happened? Thanks.

The maps ( talk is cheap) and video clearly show the Ukies retreating to Chasov Yar. Pull up the video on the Ukies leaving Bakmut on what they dub “ the Bakmut road of Death”.

Time to give it up, Bakmut is now Artymovsk, and will remain in Vlads control, the railroad hub now gives Artymovsk railway access straight into the Russian Federation….with Vlad using 60,000 artillery shells a day, expect hundreds of tons more a day to be delivered.

Vlads artillery hammer is now legendary, best part, there is nothing the Ukies or West can do about it.

Avidivka already going the way of Artymovsk, and once Vlad take Chasov Yar, there are minor cities and flat plains up to the Dniepner.

Roto Reuters’ idea of journalism is to print whatever bullshit a Democrat administration sends them. The realpolitik reality has always been Ukraine cannot win this war and the best outcome for them is that Ukraine survives while ceding the 2 Eastern provinces to Putin. It’s going to take Western Europe, whose economy is bearing the brunt of this war, to overrule Biden and his proxy war and push Zelensky to the negotiation table.

Wagner promised to ‘take the city’
Ukraine made no promise to hold it.
The Flanks of the city were assigned to Russian Forces so Wagner could concentrate on the city.
Wagner took it’s objectives and is pulling out on May 25th, to leave the city to ‘Russian Forces’ and rest it’s troops.
In the meantime....the flanks have been slowly collapsing.

To much politics, no rational military would have taken the city and left the flanks. Yes, Ukraine will probably retake the city.

Stupid war, stupid prizes.

You have a good question, a very good question.

The vast amount of reports from this war are propaganda, coming from both sides, which includes NATO.

Any questions we have about this war, including your Wagner one, could be easily answered by watching CNN, BBC, ABC, NBC etc nightly reports where their embedded and on the scene reporters are risking their lives to give accurate and up to date war reporting. If you watched these reports your Wagner question would be answered as well as all propaganda countered with the truth.

Oh, wait a minute. There is on on the scene reporting at all. Thus there is no truth. It’s all a pack of lies, propaganda that those on FR are fretting about as though it were the truth. And the MSM I mentioned above are the biggest liars of them all.

The irony is we are condemning Russia. The fact is we are no different than the Soviet Russia, where the people were lied to daily. Same applies to Nazi Germany, where there was an actual propaganda ministry.
