Wow. I climbed Popocapetl back in about 1991. It had small steam eruptions back then. It smelled like 10,000 matches being struck under your nose at the same time. In the same trip I also climbed Iztaccíhuatl which is right next to Popo and Orizaba volcano which is a distance away.

Ah, the lovely smell of sulfur dioxide and rock dust in the morning - so good for the lungs!

I have always wanted to climb Popo, and now it looks like I never will. Did drive up to the climber’s hut once, and hiked a few hundred feet on the trail. It was a cloudy day, so we couldn’t see much. I feel bad for the people who live in the Popo Ixta highlands. That is some beautiful country and charming villages.
