Blue state county votes unanimously against offshore wind development

A county in New Jersey voted unanimously to oppose an offshore wind farm proposed for its coastline, citing the project's negative impacts on the environment, tourism industry and beach vistas.

In a 4-0 vote this week, the Cape May County, New Jersey, Board of Commissioners passed a resolution green-lighting reasonable use of all the county's resources to oppose the wind projects developed by Danish multinational energy company Orsted. The county is also considering legal options and appealed a state public utility permit it says would transfer "real property interests" from residents to Orsted.

"At first, the County of Cape May was interested in trying to work with Orsted to find a way forward, perhaps with some modifications to the project to reduce visual, environmental and economic impacts," Cape May County Board of Commissioners Director Len Desiderio said in a statement.

Cape May County is a Republican county. In 2020, Trump carried the county by 16 percentage points. The GOP Presidential candidate has won every election in the 20th and 21st Centuries save 1936 and 1964 (Democratic landslides) and 1912 and 1996 (Theodore Roosevelt and Ross Perot, respectively). All local officials are Republican. This is unusual for a county where tourism is the major industry, due to the local beaches attracting people from the Philadelphia and New York areas, as well as Canadians. While opposing wind farms is NIMBYish, the windmills are probably perceived as being harmful to tourism.

Another misleading headline. Cape May County voted overwhelmingly for Trump in 2020: 57.5% for Trump, 41.5% for Biden.

Don’t be fooled. This area of NJ is pretty red. That’s one of the reasons that the blue jerks in Trenton are forcing this boondoggle on them.

Harmful to tourism yes but also we are seeing a record number of whale and porpoise beachings on the New Jersey shore since the sonar surveying for these winds projects commenced.

“Experts” say that the sonar scans are not what is causing the beaching but it is very suspicious that these incidents skyrocketed at the same time the surveying began. Nobody has another answer.
