Um, No Thanks: Guess What Stores With Self-Service Checkouts Want From You Now
PJ Media ^ | 06/04/2023 | Gwendolyn Sims

First, big box stores like Wal-Mart introduced self-service checkout stands. You know — the ones where we shoppers begrudgingly do the jobs of the stores for free while under intense electronic and in-person surveillance and all without so much as a discount or meaningful human interaction? Well, now — thanks to the Biden economy — the newest trend at restaurants and stores with self-service checkouts is to coerce and guilt consumers into adding unearned tips to their total.

I don’t know about you, Dear Reader, but I grew up in an era when tipping was in direct proportion to the quality of a service rendered. Better service was rewarded with a better tip, but the service component had to be there. Not so today. When did the simple act of buying a product become a service?

And it’s especially baffling when a shopper goes to the store, finds and removes the item from the shelf, takes it to the checkout, scans, and bags the item all on his own. Where exactly is the service in that transaction? There isn’t any, and yet a tip is still expected?

According to the New York Post, many businesses claim “these tipping prompts are completely optional, and the extra gratuity is split between all employees.” However, in reality “tips at a self-checkout machine might never even get to an actual employee since protections to tipped workers in the federal Fair Labor Standards Act don’t extend to machines.” Clearly, this type of tipping is nothing but a blatant attempt by businesses to increase revenue, not to reward good service.

THEY ALREADY are OVERPAID at $15 an hour.

Don’t have much extra income to eat out, anyway

If a place I’m visiting already pays a “Living Wage” then the tip is built into the price of the product, at least as far as I’m concerned.

You gotta.....HAND it to them.....(yeah, one more time today)

Using one's hands to pay for food. A boxed "convenience store" (Hudson Nonstop, LAX airport, Dallas Love Field airport), to Arbor Trails Whole Foods (Austin, Texas), to paying for food at Panera Bread, to other Whole Foods stores (owned by Amazon).

Yes, I use Amazon for shopping from time-to-time but this "scan-your-hand-to-pay" is already alive and in operation - no doubt it will continue to expand / grow in acceptance. The conditioning (intentional or unintentional, it will make no difference) has started.

I'm sure the people in the pics think they're showing the latest "cool thing" - possibly mocking and laughing at any reference to the "Mark of the Beast" - this is just a sampling of the pictures I found.

By the time the actual Mark of the Beast, these kinds of payment systems will be fully-embedded in society I think.

Amazon One

The world is not there - YET. But the conditioning, intentional or unintentional - it will make no difference. Fast, easy, secure, convenient. IMHO, cash will be outlawed. Digital Currency 100% will be the future. /Captain Obvious

And a second round of pictures (after the Bible verses):

Acts 2:38
New King James Version

38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."

John 3:17-18
New King James Version

17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be Saved.

18 He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Romans 10:9-10
New King James Version

9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be Saved.

10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto Salvation.

I'm a generous tipper and I don't mind tipping at my local restaurants if it helps to keep them in business.

My local Papa Murphy's Take and Bake franchise just closed down because they couldn't keep it staffed.

That said, I do wonder how much of these stories about tipping is really a function of businesses moving to cloud-based service apps like restaurant menu ordering and payment processing, where a tipping screen is a default part of the app? This would cause businesses that didn't previously request tips to suddenly have them appear in the customer-facing app.

Still, it shouldn't be there for things like grocery check-out or big-box retail stores.

Seems like a 3D printer, the right materials and you could have Jeff bezoar pay for everything. Granted I’m not in that business (printers or scanners) to know.

Went to the check out at Lowes and found only electronic ones open. Automated and credit card only. I found someone and told them I wanted to pay with cash. They had to get a manager out of the bowels of the store to meander up and open a ‘live’ lane.
I talked to her about the situation, and she said they can’t get people to work. Even at $15 an hour, no one comes to the job fairs. And of those that do show up, less than half pass the drug test.

Which reminds me of the story that was circulating a couple of months ago that Walmart was going to start charging 48¢ per shopping bag. Which is hilarious because WallyWorld bags are the cheapest and worst-made in existence, which forces customers to double-bag everything they don’t want falling to the floor.

So charging per shopping bag would be in effect forcing shoppers to foot the bill for the Walmart’s own niggardliness.

raise a ruckus with the manager when that restaurant levies a gratuity fee. refuse to pay the gratuity fee. the gratuity fee is illegal and is a soft charge towards the business.

lastly stop going to that place unless it has the one thing on the menu nobody else has or is the drug store cafe mailbox barbershop gas station.

Sometimes they have glitches and are credit card only. Sometimes, cash only. I am in a rural area and things are different out here.

Disney has been doing hand scans/finger print scans for years for park entry and other uses so this is not a new concept. (But wait, Disney’s been invading our privacy for years? Who knew.)
