I doubt it’s true. It’s as ridiculous as russian hookers urinating on a bed. If people are as basic as they are claimed to be why do they always cite absurdity. In Hitlers cas he already owns the title of most tyrannical even though Mao and Stalin were considerably worse. When they do that I tend to start the question the more supposedly legitimate aspects of the narratives.
Regards Ukraine: The political class follows the money, and the money wants Ukraine in the EU and NATO. Since this is true for the EU and US there is no dissent from over seas. The Republicans are reluctant to use this war in opposition politics like the Democrats did with Iraq starting in 2004. Because the media is mostly liberal and pro Democrat and Biden is a Democrat. What you end up with is an ENTIRELY one sided narrative.
Happy moral Ukrainian soldiers fighting for sovereignty and freedom, that are winning on all fronts. Evil Russians that have absolutely no reason for why they invaded, no one supports, and are losing on all fronts. Our MSM makes the WWII Wochenschau look like a factual and objective war report.
Yellow journalism is nothing new, but what is new are the handful of people in the media conglomerates, big tech, and government who essentially control 90% of what you read, see and hear. You only “feel” the way you do because you generally support Ukraine and like the news in that respect (affirmation), but in the bigger picture, may it be Covid, J6, the elections, this isn’t good. There are likely issues where you did not appreciate the bias and steering of the masses by a media and government, nor the fact that it’s getting to the point where on the bigger issues you essentially no longer have a public dialog rather a centralized steering of the people, not unlike in the former Soviet Union and how their media acted on all decisions handed down from their politburo.
You cannot have real freedom when you have control of what people know and think, when you can manipulate their perceptions and no longer allow for a market place of ideas pressing the censor/mute button on MDs that disagree, deplatforming, blocking oversea sites...

You are right to question when it becomes absurd, I do the same thing.
However, in this case, I don’t think it is as absurd as someone trying to make Hitler look even weirder than he was.
Apparently, “chewing the carpet” is some kind of German idiom, meant to describe behavior in the same way pacing the floor nervously (wearing off the carpet) or biting your nails.
In this case, it is entirely possible a German official he knew was explaining it to him, and the idiom didn’t translate correctly in his mind.
From the way he worded certain things, I get the impression Shirer was a Liberal in the modern sense, but he also tried to be as objective as he could (and said so multiple times in the book, because of the possibility of someone discounting what he wrote because he had a bias...and face it, who wouldn’t?)
I tend to think someone said “He fell to the floor and began chewing the carpet” (in the same way we might say “he began to chew his fingernails down to the quick” to describe someone showing overt signs of inward stress) and he, not being a native German, might not have recongnized the idiom.
The rest of the book is good enough that I give him the benefit of the doubt on that one, and while I think in 1960 one of the Germans he probably had reviewing the book for edits may have warned him, in 1960, only 15 years after the fact, maybe nobody in Germany wanted to be seen sticking up for Hitler and saying he wasn’t really that crazy!
See my response above, although Hitler was probably even at that point being pumped up by the infamous Dr. Morel who was his enabler and provider for the cocktail of drugs he was known to take in his time as Chancellor, so, I find it hard to discount nearly any bizzare behavior.

Pointless damn war. Ukraine had 90% of what they could dream of essentially, even EU membership was in their reach. Now look at them. And the Russians, thousands dead, more wounded, an appreciable amount of their military hardware destroyed... And the real culprits, our idiot administration, led by a senile old fart that’s a rubber stamp for anyone that can pay him or his party off, a bunch of kids from ivy league schools that have no frigging clue (example Jake Sullivan) that caused this mess are walking around giving speeches like they are the heros trying to help. They caused this!!! But no one wants to hold them accountable!!! No wants to pin the responsibility on those actually responsible. It’s Putin’s fault and no one asks themselves what happened in October 2021 which caused the Russians to start moving troops to Ukraine’s border?
