“How are you supposed to shop in a store like that?”
The alternative is that the store closes and you don’t shop in it at all. Embrace the suck.

That looks just like a Walgreen's drug store I visited in Philadelphia, just before I left SE Pennsylvania for good.
That was 35 years ago.
I guess California doesn't always "lead the nation."

Look, if you have a high level of theft this is what happens.
You can either deal with your thieves or you can have this or you can have no stores at all.
Those are your only three options.

So now they’re “jailing” the products instead of the thieves.

If people would stop stealing so much stores risk going out of business, they would not have to put everything in locked cabinets! Problem solved.

Retail needs to move to a “Service Merchandise” style.
Service Merchandise stores would have you look at single, mostly unworkable samples, order, then inspect product when it comes down the conveyor, then purchase or return prior to purchase.
The only change for today is you view products online, order, then view and purchase in secure cubicles.

Instead of the products in locked cabinets, there should be in-store lock-ups for those caught stealing. Products should have microchips set to trigger alarms if they have not been purchased. Any person leaving the store would have to go through detection zones

Good business opportunity for immigrants to start their own convenience stores in downtown San Francisco. Have everything on display and employees will work behind bulletproof glass.
I wouldn’t be surprised if many employees were taking an “if you can’t beat them, join them” attitude and helping themselves and blaming the shoplifters for some of the losses.

How about a business model where you shop online, pre-pay for your product, and the retailer delivers the product to your door the next day?

1. Knock three quick raps, followed by two slow raps.
2. Tell the man who answers what you want.
3. Slide the money in the peephole.
4. Wait for him to retrieve the item.

Here’s a radical idea, lock up the thieves instead of the merchandise. I can’t believe no one’s thought of this before.

When we left CA,a lot of the stuff in Walmart was in locked glass cabinets, e.g., printer cartridges, small electronics. We thought that was normal.
When we got to TN, at Walmart nothing was locked. It seems a small thing, but it made shopping so much easier.
