An opinion column in a major San Francisco newspaper tied American drivers’ frustration with cyclists to "racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia."
The piece, published by University of California, San Francisco professor Ruth Malone this week in the San Francisco Chronicle warned readers that the annoyance they may feel at sharing roads with bicyclists during their commutes comes from the same place that racial hatred and other major societal stigmas come from.
It also argued that cyclists’ push for equal status on the road as drivers is similar to gays coming out of the closet, and women’s suffrage.
The column began with a discussion on the aggression that cyclists face from the driving public on a daily basis. She mentioned the tragedy when world champion cyclist Ethan Boyce was killed while biking two months ago, and expressed her "horror" over seeing negative comments towards cyclists propagate online in the wake of the incident.

Actually, hatred of cyclists is way worse than any of those. It violently erupts here on any related thread.
It’s time to re-open the looney bins folks.
OK, whatever.
particularly if the bicyclist is a black trans woman.
The Chronicle totally pegged me.
It only compares in that it hardly exists.
“Just when you thought the left couldn’t get any loonier ... “
One should be never think that, there is no limit.
Actually I’d agree.
And I mean the general public.
I’d say I’ve had and felt more irritation with bicycle nuts than any other group.
Of course, I’m in liberalland, so all those groups are preferred….
As a bicyclist, I object to being dumped into the alphabet groups
I ride my bike.
When I drive my car, I'm respectful of my fellow cyclists' rightful and safe use of part of the roadway.
When I ride my bike, I'm especially cautious of cars, as they don't always see me, and I would lose in any exchange.
When I ride my bike, I try to stay centered in bike lanes.
When I drive my car, I give bikes room, but I do wish that they would stay centered in bike lanes.
I tend to welcome and like everyone on the road, and I do not infer hatred, racism, sexism, any 'phobias', or odd possession for imaginary lanes of asphalt.
Remember Christopher Bucchere?
He’s the San Francisco bicyclist who barrelled through a crosswalk, smashing into a 71-year-old man (who happened to be Chinese), killing him. That was in 2012.
After the accident, he explained that ‘I couldn’t see a line through the crowd and I couldn’t stop, so I laid it down and just plowed through the crowded crosswalk in the least-populated place I could find.’
Although he was convicted of manslaughter, Bucchere has never accepted responsibility for killing the elderly man. He did lament the fact that his helmet was damaged beyond repair in the collision.
Bucchere has written a book about the incident, in which he claims victimhood and “prosecutorial misconduct.”
He wasn’t sentenced to prison because the victim’s family didn’t want to punish him in that way.
He took the fact that he didn’t get prison time (due to the family’s mercy) and ran with it, spinning it as a loss for the prosecutor, and therefore an unjust prosecution.
He’s written a book, which he hawks. It’s for sale by Amazon and through other channels.
Pride Month is a convenient time to force more victims into the alphabet soup.
Unfortunately for the author of this article, “B” is already taken.
It's true, cyclists in San Francisco are a menace as bad as car drivers. This irresponsible idiot, with his grand sense of self-entitlement, got off way too easy. And a majority of San Franciscans agree that he should have gotten jail time. What the article doesn't mention is that there were witnesses that saw him blow through at least two previous stop lights prior to the one at Market Street. As well, you can see from the picture of the intersection that he could have easily turned right onto Market and avoided the crowd of pedestrians. Finally, he can also get his sentence reduced to a misdemeanor after 6 months of good behavior.
They probably meant bi-bicyclists.
I don’t ride my bicycle or motorcycle much anymore but I agree with your sentiment regarding common sense treatment of road traffic.
Everything is Racist!
The left hate gun owners, Christians, God, pro-lifers, white males and President Trump. Bigots.
Does she think hatred of Trump is due to racism, sexism, and transphobia as well?
Flaming freak bicyclists SUCK!
