Submarine on trip to explore Titanic wreck goes missing, "search and rescue operation" underway (tourists aboard)

A search and rescue mission was underway Monday morning for a submarine that went missing off the coast of southeast Canada on an expedition to explore the wreckage of the Titanic. Lt. Jordan Hart of the U.S. Coast Guard in Boston told CBS News that personnel were "currently undergoing a search and rescue operation" when asked about the rescue efforts off the coast of Newfoundland.

It is not clear how many people are on board the missing vessel.

OceanGate Expeditions, a company that deploys manned submersibles for deep sea expeditions, recently said on its website and social media feeds that an expedition to the wreckage of the HMS Titanic, which lies about 400 miles off Newfoundland's coast, was "underway."

OceanGate Expedition was not immediately available when contacted by CBS News to confirm that its vessel was the subject of the search and rescue operation, or that it was involved in any way.

Earlier this month, the company said on Twitter that it was using satellite company Starlink to help maintain communications with its expedition on the Titanic voyage.

This is a dangerous form of entertainment. Doesn’t sound good. Prayers for them all.

I bet the passengers signed a very lengthy waiver.

So much for a ‘trip of a lifetime’.

If it didn’t come back up in the allotted time, they are most likely dead. IIRC, the Titanic is under 12,500 feet of water. That equals over 5,000 PSI on the hull.

Any chance, you think, that they are still alive wherever they are stranded, and rescuable? I wonder the dimensions of their craft, number aboard and air supply timeline? Probably cold too, if they lost power. Wonder if the craft had CO2 scrubbers or such to p[rolong survival time if they needed rescuing?

Just a question of time until a Space Tourist rocket makes the same one way trip.

Bots with hi res cameras and lots of lights would do it for me.

I wouldn’t need the real thing.

I remember the Kursk. When the Russians waited until they knew the crew was dead before allowing Western help. The Finnish rescue diver connected to the stricken sub at the “escape port hatch” but when opened, the Kursk was full up with sea water and all aboard dead.

I vaguely remember the movie.

Admittedly I bought the score on ITunes for Raise The Titanic.

Thought it was a good soundtrack.

Oh, no. How horrific. I remember hearing about the Russian submarine that couldn’t surface and how they died. This is terrible.
