He must figure he needs the Chinese to help get him in office since so far actual Americans are really unimpressed.
“So you are saying he is against Obama policies:”
Biden has same Trump policy.
Nick, we’ve been through this before - 8 years ago to be exact. We had this same discussion, in which you tried to equate Obama’s economic policies with Trump’s and in which I had to educate you as to why you were wrong.
Focusing on the fact that Obama, on occasion, supported tariffs, you missed the fundamental difference between Trump’s economic policy and Obama’s. Obama used tariffs on occasion to give temporary relief to certain industries. These tariffs usually had a political motive, were temporary and did nothing to address the uncompetitiveness of domestic manufacturing, in general. The end result was that these companies would raise their prices to match the tariffed products. While these tariffs offered companies a short term respite, they did nothing to address the structural problems that has made American manufacturing uncompetitive - namely over regulation, high taxes and expensive energy. Under those conditions it made no sense for these industies to substantially expand their domestic production.
Trump’s approach is a comprehensive pro-business approach of which tariffs are only one component. Without the rest of Trumponomics the tariffs would simply cause consumer a rise in consumer prices, as they did under Obama.
