[I am interested in how much this deal will cost the US taxpayer.

“financed through US military aid, according to the Israeli military”. I assume this means the US is buying these jets from Lockheed Martin and then giving them to Israel. Buy why? Israel is a rich nation, can’t they afford to support their military?]

It’s part of the $3b annual disbursement to Israel (along with about $1.3b to Egypt and $0.5) that has been handed over as military aid since the Camp David Peace Accords. In essence, Uncle Sam bought the Sinai from Israel in exchange for this income stream, handed it to Egypt. The aid is used in order to prevent a general conflagration from taking place, that had occurred periodically since Israel’s independence, and to preserve a peace that has endured for over 4 decades since the Accords.

How fraught have Israel’s wars with its neighbors been? At a critical moment during the Yom Kippur War, when defeat and the physical extermination of the Jewish people seemed possible, Israeli decision makers contemplated the Samson Option.

Nixon quickly mounted an air and sea lift to transfer to Israel 100 late model jet fighters directly from active duty air wings, tanks, howitzers, munitions and other supplies to prevent the nation from falling. He also raised the alert status of US forces to DEFCON 3, the highest peacetime level, in preparation for confrontation with Russian forces that had been readied to intervene on Egypt’s side.

___

Correct. Good point. The hypocrisy of a dirty bigot masked as “patriot” - is so obvious yet doesn’t have any shame.

Ukraine ping

wita: [With that said, I’m betting the whole story is chump change when compared with the bottomless pit called Yew crane.]

The US has handed over chump change to Ukraine compared Israeli aid even before* the $3b a year disbursements starting in 1978. A 1978 dollar is worth $5 today, adjusted for inflation. Total aid, unadjusted for inflation, is $150b. Adjusted, it’s about $375b in today’s dollars.

* During the Yom Kippur War, the US handed over 100 late model fighter jets, significant quantities of howitzers, tanks, munitions and other supplies from active duty units in Europe. The value of the equipment and supplies sent to Israel for that war alone is likely several times what has been provided to Ukraine. Note that Israel was fighting Arabs, whose equipment and ammo stores were skimpy, and the war only lasted 19 days.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samson_Option#Deterrence_doctrine

Israel, the winner, had 400 each of its tanks and other armored vehicles destroyed. Syria and Egypt lost thousands.

The F-15 is the direct successor to the F-4. Each F-15 is $80m. 100 would be $80b. The US hasn’t supplied $80b worth of aid to Ukraine, and the war is now 25x as long as the 19-day duration of Yom Kippur.

The F+35s are needed to counter Russia’s sale of SU-35s to Iran. Russia continues to export this model using spare parts gathered before it invaded Ukraine. They just sold a batch to Uganda.

The real cost to the taxpayer will not so much be the cost of the planes themselves. We may even be giving them to Israel.

Where we will really get hosed will be the ongoing cost of support. Training, maintenance, parts upgrades, etc.

Thins about a desktop printer. The manufacturer can give they away, but you always have to buy more consumables. And in this case they have to be OEM brand.
