Republican 2024 candidates race to qualify for first primary debate
The New York Post ^ | 07/03/2023 | Josh Christenson

Five Republican presidential candidates say they have met fundraising benchmarks to participate in the party’s first primary debate next month, as other campaigns hustle both to secure the necessary financial support and hit the required polling thresholds.

Campaign reps for former President Donald Trump, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) and tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy each told The Post Monday that they had already been backed by 40,000 unique donors — including 200 unique donors in at least 20 states or territories — more than seven weeks before the first Republican National Committee-sponsored debate Aug. 23 in Milwaukee, Wis.

The next step for GOP presidential hopefuls looking for a debate slot is to garner at least 1% support in three independent national polls or two national polls and one independent poll from two of four early voting states — Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina. *** As of Monday, seven Republican candidates are polling above 1% in RealClearPolitics’ national average. Of those seven, former Vice President Mike Pence and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie have not said whether they met the RNC’s donor threshold — though they still have until Aug. 21 to hit the target.

Other candidates, including former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, former Texas GOP Rep. Will Hurd, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez and conservative radio host Larry Elder, are all polling below 1% in the RCP average, with Hutchinson (0.8%) and Elder (0.7%) closest to breaking through. ***

The debates should be interesting. The field includes some candidates who are fiscally conservative and some who approved of reckless spending.

I wonder how many of the candidates will sign the RNC pledge to support the eventual 2024 GOP nominee?

This was a gotcha question at the Fox News Debate Debacle in 2015. Everyone but Trump raised their hand. Let's see how many people comply this time.

Hopefully Trump skips it. Watching those pathetic RINOs posing and spewing word salad is time nobody can get back. 😆

Trump and DeSantis should boycott this RINO-oriented event.

Ramaswamy will be one to watch. He has more brain power and logic than any of them. It will be fun to watch him perform. He’s new, self-made, confident and, I believe, with no DS connections as is the case with Trump.

Please, for the love of god, get word to the Meatball and tell him to GET OUT! His career is at stake.

If Trump doesn’t participate few will bother watching. Why watch 3 people who have no real chance at winning even a single primary and 1 who has been steadily dropping in the polls since he officially announced he was running?

Tucker needs to moderate the debates.

Remaswamy probably has more brain power and the ability to communicate logic than the group of them together.

What debates? Trump is indicating he plans to stay in his basement.

Ramaswamy

Already admitted he wants transvestites in the military. 100% disqualifier.

Ramaswamy will be one to watch.

I have high hopes for him as well. A true intellectual conservative.

The mainstream media is actually going to allow these debates to be seen?

I like his ideas but with the type of Republican Party we have today they would not go anywhere. America needs help badly!

There is one in Vietnam and correctly was criticized for abuse of animals as the Vietnamese use weapons to hurt the elephants to get them going faster.

I plan to vote for Ramaswamy. He’s America First without the juvenile theatrics.
