Trump: First Term ‘Mistake’ Was Some of the People I Picked for My Cabinet
Breitbart ^ | 16 Jul 2023 | Pam Key

Posted on 07/16/2023 11:31:42 AM PDT by SoConPubbie

Former President Donald Trump said on this week’s broadcast of “Sunday Morning Futures” that the only mistake he made during his time in office was some of the people he picked to serve in his cabinet.

Anchor Maria Bartiromo asked, “Is there is anything you could look back on in 16 that you think maybe you want to do differently?”

Trump said, “The mistake would be people. I mean, I wouldn’t have put a guy like Bill Barr, and he was weak and pathetic. I wouldn’t have put Jeff Sessions. And there are some people that I wouldn’t have put in. You know, most people were good, but I had some people, we had Esper. I didn’t like him. He was incompetent. I thought we had other people I didn’t like.”

Bartiromo asked, “Why did you put them in the job then?”

Trump said, “You put somebody in, and you think they are good.”

He added, “All of a sudden, I’m the president of the United States, and it’s like a different society. I was New York, and, you know, it was a different thing. So I didn’t know people. I became president. I’m riding down Pennsylvania Avenue with our first lady. I had 250 motorcycles. I had armies. I had everything. I said, do you believe it? We’re president. Take a look. This is wild, right? But I never was involved in that.”

Bartiromo said, “So you didn’t know what to expect.”

Trump said, “Well, I didn’t know the people. I know the people now better than anybody has ever known. The people I know, the good ones, the bad ones, the dumb ones, the smart ones.”

“Well, I didn’t know the people.”

I totally agree with that.

“I know the people now better than anybody has ever known.”

No evidence of that. He continues to make bad picks, in lawyers particularly. He condemns some good people out of personal disagreements, which suggests he relies too much on “loyalty” and not competence.

For instance Mike Pompeo, at the CIA and State, arriving there (bpth places) appointed by Trump, did a great job in both places, carrying out Trump’s foreign policy, and often going around the deep state in both agencies to get those policies implemented (like with the Abraham accords). Yet I don’t think Trump would pick Pompeo again and I don’t think Pompeo would accewpt if asked. Pompeo did as and all that Trump asked, but also did not shirk from advising Trump, even if politely disagreeing. I think Trump tried some things that Pompeo suggested would not work. Operationally Pompeo was loyal but I think Trump resented him.

GW Bush had a different approach, he didn;t want yes men and did not think all his principles had to agree. Getting more than one good opinion was a good thing to him.

In the end a Presidents mistakes are their own, as they do have the final say, no matter who they pick.

I think Trump had no problem with Barr, until the 2020 election voting was over. Then I think it became personal, with Barr thinking he was staying in line with the law, and Trump thinking Barr had legal latitude Barr did not believe he had. Who had the greater federal legal experience?

If Trump wins his 2nd cabinet must be all Washington outsiders.

Yup. Only way to go.

“There is one man Donald Trump was wise to choose as a cabinet member: Ben Carson.”

I like Ben Carson. I think Trump picked him for HUD because he did not see HUD as a controversial policy arena, as far as any initiatives of Trump. I can’t imagine Trump putting Carson in any other cabinet position, given a number of factors not least of which is their different personalities. Carosn is as mild mannered as they come. What you see in public is the same as his private voice and demeanor.

“I could have sworn most of these same people at the time thought Pence was a good choice.”

You are correct. They are what I call Monday morning quarterbacks.

I wasn’t aware LBJ, damn his soul made government unions legal.
I learned something there.
Furlough of employees doesn’t eliminate any agencies.
they still have budgets and get paid, they just are on a vacation, nobody will be around to do the “work” in a dark building. Union dues will still be paid
GSA still has its money it just can’t issue contracts for utilities. Spend the money elsewhere.
As to making congress work the President can’t do that of course, but he can control things so they have to act.
Shut down the government. I don’t need it. I don’t care about parks, international travel, et al that they shut down to piss off and scare the stupid public.
I’m suggesting something that has not been seen in modern history, “scorched Earth” policy that is legal, but not normal business.
It doesn’t save any money, but it shuts the swamp down.
They still exist but they are at home sipping on wine and playing re-runs on the television. Not doing stuff that hurts us.

The money can’t be spent elsewhere unless there is legislation.

By the way
Of the total government workers (local, state & federal) unionized - 37%.
Of the total Federal government workers - 31% are unionized.

“Yup. He’s a businessman not a politician. In business, your word is your bond, or you go bankrupt because word gets around you are untrustworthy.”
******************************************************
Trump is absolutely a politician. After 4 years in office and running again for a third time he’s proven himself to be pure politician. He’s used tactics right out of the Harry Reid playbook without flinching.

“In business your word is your bond....”

That’s a myth of cosmic proportions, especially for large private developers. They screw more people than cheap hookers and as a result they keep armies of lawyers employed.

BTW, how many bankruptcies has Trump filed?

Flynn paid the price and we did nothing.

Giuliani is a good choice and a fighter. The Deep State recommends taking his law license. If still wants to fight the bastards?

Ric Grendel is fearless and brave.

Three good choices of which two are seriously wounded.

Agree, Sessions turned out to be a snake. He should have withdrawn his name when the Senate forced his to recuse himself at the very beginning.
